Athletic Trainer turned Sports Journalist
Thanks for checking out my work. I m a recent graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. I spent my college years majoring in Exercise and Sport Science with the goal of becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer. Athletic training provided unique insight behind the curtain in the world athletes live. For the past four years, I’ve spent my time assessing and treating injured athletes. Unlike many people, I got to see a behind the scenes look into the day to day struggle to stay healthy and compete, the hours upon hours of practice, meeting room film sessions, and intense workouts in the weight room with the strength and conditioning staff. I’m thankful for the foundation I’ve gained; however, I do not want to spend the entirety of my career assessing and treating athletes, I want to tell their stories. The challenges listed above are what make athletics special and I want to chronicle those experiences. In the clips below I hope you can gain a sense of my writing style. I’ve included clips from my two previous desks with a mix of long and short-form pieces.
WRITING | RESEARCHING | REPORTING
Hi there! I'm Kelly Nicole Barahona, a New York City lady in her mid-20s with a whimsical written voice. Animation has a soul (or an "anima" for the 1/2 Italian like me). Writing about happenings in the animation world -- films to screenings to panels -- is a passion of mine. I also volunteer my time in the community in adult education and provide my talents in the grant writing/research and non-profit fields. Honestly though, if it involves writing, I'm always willing to put in the work to make the piece as strong as can be.

Freelance Writer and Editor
I am a freelance writer and editor with over fifteen years of experience. I have recently returned to the United States after living in China for fifteen years, and much of my writing has to do with China and China-adjacent topics, although I also write on education, the arts, travel, books, culture, politics, parenting and language, and am co-writer at the blog Prentice Pieces. I have taught high school English and history in both China and the United States, and am a parent to two children who were born and attended elementary school in China. Thus, I am particularly interested in the differences between the educational systems in China and the United States. I also enjoy writing about China's non-Han ethnic groups, having spent the majority of my time in China in Yunnan province, where many of China's ethnic minority groups also live. As an editor, I specialize in academic editing, including research, dissertations, admissions essays, academic journals, and books. I also have experience as a developmental and copy editor for fiction, specializing in literary fiction, contemporary women's fiction, fantasy, and young adult fiction.
