Raphael Helfand

Reporter, Editor, Critic

I'm a freelance journalist living in Brooklyn, NY and working toward a Master's degree in Cultural Reporting and Criticism at New York University. Before I moved here, I lived in New Orleans for six years, reporting on music and cultural economy. I'm passionate about telling the stories of people whose voices are rarely heard and exploring the human side of cultural data. I've just started as the music editor at Laid Off NYC, a brand new online outlet for laid off and financially precarious New York-based freelancers. I also contribute to ANTIGRAVITY Magazine, a New Orleans countercultural alt-monthly where I was an Associate Editor before I moved, and to Tone Glow, a weekly experimental music newsletter. My writing has appeared in The Fader, The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, Gambit Weekly, OffBeat Magazine, My Spilt Milk and The Iron Lattice. I'm currently working on several long form pieces, including a story about New York landlords and their response to the COVID-19 crisis; an audio project about census outreach in northeast Queens, the most linguistically diverse area in the world and the hardest hit by the virus; and a book about the legendary avant garde singer Scott Walker.
