Halina Loft

I am at my happiest when I am turning a word over and over in my mind. Stringing a series of words together into a phrase that's silky smooth is pretty good, too. Copywriter and editor based in Brooklyn. Currently of MarketSmiths, formally of WGBH News and NHPR.

Kara Guzman

Science writer

I graduated from Stanford with a biology degree in 2005, thinking I was headed to medical school. Thank god I didn't. For seven years, I ran education nonprofits for inner-city children in East Palo Alto and Boston. Then I traveled around the Pacific Rim for a year, discovering my talent for writing. I became a news reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, where I wrote hundreds of stories on daily deadline, mostly on science and education. Now I'm a freelance science and environment writer, based in Santa Cruz, CA. Email me at [email protected]

Melinda Clynes

Freelance Writer

For 25 years I’ve worked as a freelance writer, providing communications/editorial expertise for organizations. I also write and edit features. The business and journalism aspects of my work each bring different challenges and rewards. My for-profit and nonprofit portfolio includes web content, newsletters, brochures, video scripts, leader bios/profiles, press releases, and annual reports. Current and past clients include a host of great companies, from public relations agencies to land conservancies to graphic design houses, staffing firms and food banks. Being a freelancer suits me well, as I like having many plates in the air! I'd love to learn about what you do and see how we might work together.

Laura Aebi

Content Creator

I’m currently seeking alternate career paths while I continue to freelance and hustle as a publicist. I’m currently working remotely with Purpose Public Relations after leaving Scoville due to an unexpected move to Portland, Oregon. I’m seeking a part or full-time job using the skills I’ve already honed in PR and journalism. As a publicist, I am responsible for assessing a client’s outreach goal and crafting pitches around that goal, as well as finding aligned media and speaking. I have also “ghostwrote” for clients in many publications including MindBodyGreen, the Portland Business Journal, the Puget Sound Business Journal and more. Before PR, I was the features/lifestyle editor at a newspaper that publishes five days a week. I was responsible for daily paginating using InDesign, managing interns, overseeing the creation of magazines, managing social media and other editorial responsibilities. I graduated from Texas State University in communications, with an emphasis in journalism, and a minor in sociology. Before my position at the paper, I worked two unpaid internships for two separate radio stations, KTSW 89.9 and NPR’s KUT 90.5, during my senior year. For both stations, I worked as a news reporter and produced daily content. I am passionate, hardworking, friendly and committed. I have thrived in every job I have ever worked.

I am an experienced nonfiction editor, published author, and award-winning journalist who provides editing and content writing services to English language clients worldwide. I understand the impact of words and creative problem-solving to help writers perfect their work and meet clients' needs in their authentic voice and brand. With a keen editor's eye, I pride myself on my resourcefulness and ability to translate complex issues into powerful and clear language. I appreciate deadlines, too, and I meet them. My current work involves writing and editing everything from articles and book manuscripts to speeches and blogs. I provide nonfiction book proposal and manuscript critiques as well as one-on-one consulting, copy editing, proofreading, line editing, substantive (heavy) editing, and developmental editing. My own publishing experience includes co-authoring a triple memoir — “Three Wishes: A True Story of Good Friends, Crushing Heartbreak, and Amazing Luck on Our Way to Love and Motherhood” (Little, Brown & Co.) — that was dubbed “A Tome of the Brave" by Oprah's O Magazine and published in five other countries. I draw on a decades-long journalism career to expertly handle a wide range of genres and topics and keep projects on track for my clients. As a reporter for The Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Miami Herald, I covered everything from politics, education, parenting, and plane crashes to hurricanes, hackers, and neuroscience, and I was one of 10 international journalists selected for an MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship. I've freelanced for NPR, The Economist, National Geographic News, Slate, This Old House, and Boston Magazine, among many others, as well as academic institutions and nonprofits including Northwestern University and Boston University.
