I'm a multi-talented writer specializing in business and real estate news, with a special focus on social justice. I also write about organic farming, gardening, the outdoors, and the environment, and have done pro bono writing and editing for several nonprofits. My goal is to provide high-quality, accurate, and engaging writing. I pride myself in being cooperative, positive, and always punctual with deadlines. Said my editor, Lani Rosales, "Ellen is one of our most talented writers, flawlessly connecting with our audience. Her writing is always exactly what we're looking for, is without error, consistently engages the reader, and stands out. She is truly one of the best Staff Writers we've ever had on the team, and her gift transcends topic - she is a rare jewel." I am also a freelance copy editor and proofreader. Science writer
I graduated from Stanford with a biology degree in 2005, thinking I was headed to medical school. Thank god I didn't. For seven years, I ran education nonprofits for inner-city children in East Palo Alto and Boston. Then I traveled around the Pacific Rim for a year, discovering my talent for writing. I became a news reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, where I wrote hundreds of stories on daily deadline, mostly on science and education. Now I'm a freelance science and environment writer, based in Santa Cruz, CA. Email me at [email protected]

Journalist and Science writer
I'm a French journalist with roots in the UK and Spain. I'm always thinking about creative ways to tell stories, through short multimedia articles, long reads or inspiring documentaries. Five years ago, I entered the world of science journalism and have since then been happily reporting on a range of topics linked to health, environment and archaeology. Currently, I'm also employed by the National Health Institute in France (Inserm) to work on science writing and communications projects - and in particular doing work around fake news at the time of Covid-19. I also like a challenge and enjoy taking on other topics. I've written a number of business features for French national paper Les Echos to explore how management practices are being transformed, and how companies are embracing new values linked to sustainability. Trilingual French-English-Spanish, I also offer editing services and have just completed an Oxford University creative writing short course. You can find a selection of some of my best pieces below. Content Creator & Data-based Storyteller
I’m seeking a role that utilizes the communication and design skills that I’ve already honed in marketing, public relations and journalism. I’m currently seeking a company to grow with using my writing, editing and storytelling skills I have honed as a newspaper editor, publicist and marketing coordinator. Currently, I am a newspaper editor and in this role, I am responsible for planning, overseeing and executing the creation of all content for our daily digital newsletter and monthly print newspaper. Our content has a large focus on data, such as communicating demographic trends using census data, establishing price changes using real estate data and breaking down complicated budget and bond data. I plan, edit and delegate all of the content for print and online. I am also responsible for writing between 20-40 stories per month. I love the act of data-based storytelling and crafting compelling messages using proven methods. Previous to Community Impact Newspaper, I served as a marketing coordinator for Kevia, a sustainable jewelry and fashion company, and JourneeBox, a subscription box that I directly oversaw the launch for. In that role, I interpreted analytics to implement strategic marketing plans, designed web and email content, and sourced products from vendors — as well as designing the packaging and products themselves. I crafted all of the messages for the brand's presence, such as the website, e-mails, printed materials and more. I also gained firsthand experience with the worldwide shipping landscape through our use of vendors throughout Asia and Africa. I learned about customs processes, freight options and logistics. As a publicist, I was responsible for assessing a client’s outreach goal and crafting pitches around that goal, as well as finding aligned media and speaking. I have also “ghostwrote” for clients in many publications including MindBodyGreen, the Portland Business Journal, the Puget Sound Business Journal and more. I was also responsible for finding aligned media and speaking opportunities to tell my client's messages. In this position, I also managed social media, curated graphic designs and wrote copy. Before public relations, I was the features/lifestyle editor at the San Marcos Daily Record, a newspaper that publishes five editions per week. I was responsible for daily pagination using InDesign, managing interns, overseeing the creation of magazines, managing social media and other editorial responsibilities. I graduated from Texas State University in communications, with an emphasis in journalism, and a minor in sociology. Before my position at the paper, I worked two unpaid internships for two separate radio stations, KTSW 89.9 and NPR’s KUT 90.5, during my senior year. For both stations, I worked as a news reporter and produced daily content. I am passionate, hardworking, friendly and committed.

I draw on a decades-long journalism career to expertly handle a wide range of genres and topics and keep projects on track for my clients.
