"Why is writing so hard?" Writing encompasses everything from coming up with ideas, planning, understanding the purpose of an assignment, shaping paragraphs, assembling sentences, to staying focused--down to the last spell-check. I want to help learners of every age find greater ease in self-expression, whether writing a college application essay, generating a paper of literary analysis, or studying vocabulary. I want them to become stronger readers, writers, thinkers. When I get to know new families, I strive to understand their goals, and I develop strategies to strengthen skills for every student. Whenever possible, I love to tailor the materials to their interests. In addition to overall language arts and humanities studies, I support students with language-based learning challenges, including dyslexia and dysgraphia. To better serve all learners, I studied Wired for Reading, a kid-friendly linguistics program designed to strengthen reading, spelling, and vocabulary. To supplement my knowledge of handwriting mechanics, particularly for students who learned at home during the pandemic, I've begun studying Handwriting Without Tears. Even with keyboarding, it's critical that students retain the skill of writing by hand. Past elementary school, few schools continue to focus on writing fundamentals. So for many students, with all kinds of minds, a structured approach, beginning at the sentence level, is the place to start. Before becoming a mentor for writing and learning, I worked as a journalist and writer for Microsoft and other companies. As a writer, I tell stories through a human lens, designed to make businesses grow and individual lives better. Bringing together my professional background in communications and my passion for lifelong learning, I encourage a skill-based, conversational writing and thinking process with time-tested tools, craft, and heart. Meanwhile, I write poetry and other forms of "creative writing," and I'm tiptoeing my way toward open mics. I teach poetry and fiction-writing for students who have these kinds of assignments--or simply want to play. As a journalist and podcaster, I have developed a diverse portfolio covering sports, politics, and various other topics. This summer, I interned at Courier News in Somerville, NJ, part of the USA Today network. During my time there, I covered town council meetings, crime and court stories, local news, and other events across the counties we served. I am set to graduate from the University of Miami in December 2024, with a major in journalism and minors in political science and finance. My coursework has spanned a range of journalism disciplines, from feature writing to sports journalism, equipping me with many content creation skills. I have had the opportunity to report on a variety of events, from South Miami City Hall meetings to Inter Miami soccer games and my work has been featured in the Miami Herald. My tenure at the school newspaper, the Miami Hurricane, has been valuable. After nearly two years of writing opinion and news articles, I have become the co-editor for the opinion section in my final semester. My experience also extends to television, specifically at UMTV, the university's TV station. For two years, I contributed to the news show NewsBreak, where I honed my skills in researching, scriptwriting, on-camera performance, and video editing using Adobe Premiere. Additionally, I expanded my technical abilities by learning to record and edit video packages. I have also worked for the school radio station and completed a podcasting class, which led me to create my own podcasts and gain experience using Adobe Audition. Outside the newsroom, I stay informed about current events, both out of professional necessity and personal interest. An essential lesson I've learned is the value of diverse perspectives in journalism. Understanding multiple viewpoints and presenting well-rounded reporting are fundamental to my approach. My minors in political science and finance bolster my subject matter expertise. When tackling stories, I embrace curiosity and skepticism, striving for balanced, objective narratives. I consider myself a versatile reporter, comfortable across various platforms and newsrooms. My ultimate career goal is to be a print reporter covering politics, writing opinion pieces, or hosting my own podcast.
