Dylan Arnold

Fall 2018 J1 Student

United States

I took 21st Century Journalism because I enjoy writing and photography. I also had previous experience with the yearbook committee at my old school. Another reason I took this class is because 21st Century Journalism is a prerequisite for Newspaper and Yearbook, both of which had previously caught my eye.

In 21st Century Journalism, I learned a variety of useful skills that I can apply in future classes and jobs. I learned how to use Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator to produce media and graphics. I also learned more about imovie and how to create a multimedia project. I also enhanced my photoshop skills, something which I had previously had little to no experience.

I'm still undecided on if I want to pursue a career in yearbook or journalism.

Some of the things I liked in this class is the ability to move at your own pace on projects. While some deadlines are critical, most projects progress and develop throughout the course of weeks and you can move at your own pace. I specifically enjoyed making graphics for the Typography assignment because it allowed for a lot of creative thinking. On many of the projects, creative thinking is encouraged by the teacher and no two projects are alike.

Something I can do differently next year is work on turning in assignments in on time. I struggle with deadlines and often procrastinate and while my teacher was extremely lenient and nice about grading late assignments, turning projects or homework in late in the future simply won't cut it.

"When adults say, ' Teenagers think they're invincible ' with that sly, stupid grin on their face, they don't know how right they are. We need never be hopeless because we can never be irreparably broke. We think that we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all energy, we can only change. Shapes and sizes and manifestations. They forget that when they are old. They get scared of losing and failing. But that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin, and it cannot end, so it cannot fail." - John Green

AP Style Quizzes & Newsworthiness

The AP quizzes taught us about the rules of journalism and helped when writing news stories or writing for other assignments in the class. Newsworthiness helped us determine on if an event or subject was newsworthy and also helped further the baseline of education for journalism.

Copy of 2018 Law & Ethics

Law and Ethics was a long and time consuming project that taught me about the ethics side of journalism. Shattered Glass was an eye opening experience to honesty and how it plays a role in journalism. The first amendment follow up and quiz also revealed more of the technical side of journalism and what freedoms journalists have.

Hacker Story

The Hacker Story was our first assignment in Journalism. We were given the resources and had to write a story about the event. It was an pre-assignment as it opened the gates for Journalism and showed me the strengths and weaknesses of my writing. The Leads assignment was a lead up assignment to the bigger stories we'd be writing later on and proved that a lead was important to a story. Using Quotes was also an important assignment as we would be using quotes a lot later on. It was important...

This assignment was our last major assignment we had. The design of the story took thought and process and the story also took some time to develop because there was a lot of information to cover.

Typography and Pathfinder

This was my favorite project out of the entire year. I spent multiple days working to achieve perfection and images I was satisfied with. We also learned how to identify the basic types of typography and how they help enhance the visuals of a graphic. Pathfinder was the first project that introduced Indesign, a crucial program for future projects. This project was enjoyable and also easy.

Infographic

The infographic assignment was one of my most intricate projects for the design category. This was also one of my favorite projects to work on.

Multimedia (I didn't finish the Promo assignment because I didn't have time to complete them as I was already behind on the design and story.)

This was one of the more challenging projects since you had to think about each picture before you took it and how to capture the right style and frame.

Photoshop Edits

Editing picture in photoshop was another project that required thought when editing the pictures. We learned how to adjust a photo to give it the best appeal.
