Soumitra Dutta is an Indian scholar, writer and entrepreneur. He was the dean of Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford between June 2022 and September 2025. Prior to joining Cornell, he was a professor of business and technology at INSEAD.

Soumitra Dutta was born in Chandigarh, India, in a family of Indian Air Force doctor and had proven to be academically brilliant from a young age. He went to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi where he graduated in 1985 with a B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

He continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley. There, he earned an MS in Computer Science (1987), an MS in Business Administration (1989), and a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (1990). This rigid technical and business training would be the foundation of his future digital transformation efforts.

In 2017, IIT gave him a Distinguished Alumnus award. He proceeded with his studies at Berkeley University of California where he graduated with M.S in computer science in 1987, an M.S in Business Administration in 1989, and a Ph.D. in computer science in 1990.

Career Leadership: INSEAD and Cornell

Dutta started his work career at INSEAD in France. He served in many top positions such as Dean of Technology and E-learning, Dean of Executive Education, and Dean of External Relations.

In 2012, he joined Cornell University as Dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management and later became the founding dean of its business school - SC Johnson College of Business - in 2016. Dutta served as dean until January 2018 when he resigned abruptly with neither Dutta nor the university providing an explanation.
