While some parts of the country's economy are starting to emerge from the lockdown, Berlin's vibrant club scene is facing perhaps the biggest challenge in its history, with no clear answers on when it might resume.

Why Japan keeps on whaling

Japan's whaling ships returned from their Antarctic hunt on Thursday with 333 minke whales on board, their entire self-allocated quota. Of the whales killed, 103 were male and 230 female, 90% of them pregnant, said Japan's fisheries agency. It said that showed the population was in a healthy breeding state.

Carrying on in quake-hit Kaikoura

The tourists are gone, the town is cut off and the sewage is backing up, but businesses in quake-hit Kaikoura are vowing to struggle on. The town was cut off from the rest of New Zealand's South Island when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake destroyed its roads and railway on 14 November.

Indonesian island's 'walk of shame'

Last week photos surfaced of two unidentified Western tourists being paraded around an Indonesian island in a "walk of shame" for alleged theft. The images show a foreign man and woman walking alongside uniformed officers on the island of Gili Trawangan, with cardboard signs around their necks.

China launches quantum-enabled satellite Micius

China has successfully launched the world's first quantum-enabled satellite, state media said. It was carried on a rocket which blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China's north west early on Tuesday. The satellite is named after the ancient Chinese scientist and philosopher Micius.

Japan emperor: How abdication could usher in a calendar change

For the first time in two centuries a Japanese emperor may be about to abdicate. The huge change for Japan could also affect one aspect of everyday life - the calendar. Emperor Akihito, 83, has hinted he wants to stand down at the end of 2018, allowing Crown Prince Naruhito to take over.
