Short Stories
Explorer c-324 continued doggedly towards yet another planet which was, in all likelihood, uninhabitable. Everyone was acutely aware that the potable water supply and the food rations were running low. The spaceship was serviceable in a hastily welded and bolted, clunky sort of way, and not quite large enough for its crew of 25.
Death was accompanied by the patter of nurses' rubber-soled shoes marching briskly along linoleum floors. The smell of antiseptic solution. A gurney wheel, in need of oil, squeaking rhythmically as another patient was rushed past. Starchy white sheets, and the sharp and angular shapes of nurses headdresses.
The authoritative clicks of Tanya’s high-heeled boots were the only noise in the entire world at that moment. The silence of the crowded but frozen airport was not disconcerting to her; she was experienced with artificially created stillness. She was its master.
