My initial thought whenever looking at the Mona Lisa: She isn't anything special. Normally, this sentiment would prompt one to quickly avert their eyes. Seek out something more worthy of the attention. But Mona Lisa's famous name alone causes my gaze to linger on her image.
I previously wrote an article addressing why we need more movies about African-American writers, artists, and innovators; and not musicians. The fact is that there is a multitude of great African-American musicians that have had a significant impact on American culture.
Last year, the Black cinema-focused website Shadow and Act updated their list of biopics set to be produced on African-American public figures. At the time, the list contained over sixty projects. Personally, I have yet to see most of these projects hit the screen and according to the writer, many of them haven't made it far beyond an initial announcement.
In the last few years, The Oscars has been getting a lot of backlash for failing to recognize anyone outside of white males. With the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements still going strong and bringing more attention than ever on the mistreatment of women in the film industry, this year's ceremony was largely focused on celebrating the talented but too few women nominated.
Comedian and actor Kevin Hart is the latest celebrity to learn that what you post on social media, no matter how long ago, will come back to haunt you. Last month, after the announcement that Hart would be hosting the 91st Academy Awards, homophobic tweets that the comedian posted between 2009 and 2011 were uncovered and circulated throughout the media.
