I am a freelance writer who has contributed columns on topics such as popular culture and feminism to websites such as Slant, the Odyssey, Feminist Campus, and the American Writers Museum blog. Currently, I am a contributor for the independent book site Book Riot. Over the past two years I have been the Editor in Chief of the University of Michigan's first and only feminist literary magazine, What the F. I am also in the process of completing my senior Honors thesis in English.
Recently, my friend told me a story about when she went surfing in South Africa. I won't retell it here, because she might still write about it someday, but it was one of those stories that are just made for an essay. It was quirky and funny and ripe for insight.
My bedroom at home (some people I know now refer to their version of this place as "my parents' house," but it is still home to me) overlooks a small forest on the other side of which is the local high school's baseball field.

After about 5 years, I am finally beginning to own my experience with disordered eating. I choose the term "disordered eating" deliberately, as I was never diagnosed with or received treatment for any kind of eating disorder. But disordered eating - or a generalized "Food Thing" - was the/a major way that my depression manifested...

A few weeks ago, on Mother's Day, I read a beautiful essay in the New Yorker titled "My Friends' Moms," by Rivka Galchen. In the piece, Galchen reflects on the mothers of her childhood friends that made a particular impact on her growing up and whose lessons she still uses today.
I sat down in a coffee shop, prepared to write an article about the recent petition from a group of Yale English majors that calls to "decolonize" their poetry course requirement. I had read news articles about it, but had never read the actual petition in question, and I needed to.
I have (temporarily) undergone a relocation. I have many feelings about this, the vast majority of them extremely positive, but certain things simply require an adjustment period. I don't have a favorite bookstore here yet, and since going to the bookstore is sort of like therapy, I'll need to start auditioning some contenders pretty soon.
