Louisiana quilters stitch together effort to help flood victims return to craft

Tears of joy and relief flowed Saturday as more than 100 ardent quilters gathered at a Baton Rouge church to pick up donated sewing machines and supplies to replace materials lost in August's floods. By 8 a.m., quilters were already lining the walkway to Highland Presbyterian Church for a quilting project dubbed Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

Thousands gather at LSU for annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

An extended family of sorts came out Saturday to walk in support of Michelle Perk and her mother, Mollee "Motsie" Vicknair, who has waged a long battle with cancer. More than 60 current and former students of Perk, an algebra teacher at Dutchtown High School, gathered at LSU for the Susan G.

Security of agricultural funding raises concerns

BATON ROUGE - Two pieces of House legislation have raised concerns in the agricultural community and creating doubt about the security of agricultural funding dollars. House Bill 5, sponsored by Rep. Rick Edmonds, R-Baton Rouge, and House Concurrent Resolution 1, sponsored by House Speaker Taylor Barras, R-Iberia, call for the use of fee-based agricultural funds to shield or supplement the state general fund.

International students protesting potential insurance changes

Neepa Kuruppu Arachchige, like hundreds of international students, stared at her screen in shock as the cost of her insurance suddenly skyrocketed in late November. Because of a proposed change to the University's health insurance requirements, Arachchige's private insurance options under her current provider, ISO Insurance, were reduced down to a single plan.

Faculty pursuing creation of paid parental leave policy

The University's Faculty Senate will begin negotiations in mid-September with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Finance and Administration in hopes of establishing a paid parental leave policy for University faculty. Industrial engineering professor Fereydoun Aghazadeh and English professor Lillian Bridwell-Bowles first proposed the policy in Faculty Senate Resolution 16-08 in April.

Ralliers maintain alleged Tiger Band, School of Music dispute prompted King's administrative leave

Approximately a dozen supporters gathered Monday morning to deliver petitions to LSU President F. King Alexander and Gov. John Bel Edwards in support of Tiger Band director Roy King, who was recently placed on administrative leave. Mary Bahlinger, 2014 Tiger Band drum major, led the group, which submitted copies of a change.org petition with nearly 1,500 signatures to Alexander's and Edwards' staffs.

University already lacks competitive salaries, manageable faculty workloads

For department of mathematics chair Robert Perlis, the current budget crisis is just one more disaster in a series of setbacks that have prevented the University from achieving its full potential. "For 36 years, I've been saying we're about to turn the corner, we're about to become a great university - and it's still that way," Perlis said.
