As Egypt comes to terms with one of its largest terror attacks in recent times, sadly the region in general is all too familiar. Faarah Adan, a freelance journalist based in the UK and US, was visiting his home city of Mogadishu when he was caught up Somalia's worst terror attack to date.

It was past 5 p.m. and the setting sun's crepuscular rays, streaming through the gaps in the clouds, converged upon the war-ravaged city, giving it a golden hue.
It was a bright Saturday afternoon in Mogadishu, a clear sky glowing blue above the once beautiful city. The busy K5, or Zoobe Junction, one of Mogadishu's vital arteries, with its string of shops, hotels and restaurants, was teeming with people from all walks of life.
