I write to learn. To find out what makes people see things differently: what stands out, what shakes you up, what stays with you.

I am passionate about not only using words—but finding the right ones— that capture people and the lives they're living. My focus is on human interest pieces, with an emphasis on education, leadership, and the outdoors.

Most recently, I have written for the Manchester Journal (VT) and the Boulder Weekly (CO). On my blog, I try to capture the complexities of being human in words. I share what I've learned and encourage people to write alongside me (emmalillemor.com).

Merry wanderer of the stage

It's 1981 - maybe '82 - and The Arizona Theatre Company is putting on a performance of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie. An Odyssey of one's own

Think about the homecoming that is taking place right now - slowly - across the globe. We are all, in some way, returning. To grocery stores, to local restaurants, to family reunions. We are leaving our masks at home. We are finding our footing as we say yes to going out, yes to our old [...]

Post-pandemic 'Pericles' - Boulder Weekly

After a year of isolation and loss, nostalgia is in full swing: the re-emergence of Friends, Sex and the City, JNCO and low-rise jeans remind us of a time before surgical masks and delta variants. There's a yearning for the past, even at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (CSF).

A case for outdoor education

Life outdoors is different. It’s hard. Outdoor education students have to build a shelter, cook meals and stay warm using only what they and their group are carrying with them. The bones of life are simplified: here is a tent, a sleeping bag, a stove. Here is a pot, one spoon, a pair of boots. Here is your life for the next few weeks.

The nonprofit's huts provide shelter and simple amenities to skiers, hikers and bikers in the [...]

Locals only

Boulder is made up of born-and-raised Coloradans, older folks who were here when the moniker "People's Republic of Boulder" was first hung on the town and a whole lot of transplants that came for any number of reasons. Some fell in love - with a person, with the mountains, or both - and never left.
