I run through the doors of the emergency room, give my name at the desk, and right away the triage nurse tells me to follow him. We walk fast, faster than I've ever walked, maybe I am running, and the nurse points at a room with the curtains drawn.

Other Voices: Scenes of death and a writer at loss for words

It's nearly 2 p.m. at the National Writers Workshop and I'm struggling to choose my next session. My right wrist aches; I've just heard Timothy Egan, and his advice on how to write books caused me to bend my head over the workshop-issued notebook and frantically scribble notes in lavender Bic.
