On a recent night at the Institute of Contemporary Art, a security guard ventured into an upstairs showroom only to find someone positioned on the upper rungs of a ladder. At first the guard panicked, thinking the shadowy figure might be an intruder, before realizing it was an automaton - a prop in an exhibition opening to the public Saturday.
Members of artist Barry McGee's crew rendered an artwork on the outside of the House of Blues, 15 Lansdowne St., Thursday. The work was done in conjunction with McGee's mid-career survey exhibition, which opens April 6 at the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Here in Cambridge's Neighborhood Nine is your typical American house, a two-story affair in cadet grey; winters have tarnished its wrought iron fence, the gate of which is fixed open; a flagstone path leads from there to the door.

In celebration of International Women's Day, Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine of the Boston-based electronic duo Soul Clap will host Dance Jam at Middlesex Lounge. Various versions of the event have been held since 2005, and in various cities - London and Berlin, to name a couple.
On Friday night, SoundScape brings us the inimitable Berlin DJ Rampa. What sets Rampa apart, says SoundScape's resident DJ Mike Swells, is that "he draws from a much broader category of music." Swells, who will be opening along with SoundScape's other resident DJ Daniel V, anticipates a tech-house playlist from Rampa.
