Last year Time ran a cover story, titled "The Me-Me-Me Generation: Millennials are lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with their parents." The article's author, renowned journalist Joel Stein, cited studies that indicate millennials are significantly more narcissistic than older generations of Americans.
Since 2009, the annual Millennial Impact Report has consistently conveyed that the millennial generation (born after 1980) is "eager to connect, get involved, and give to causes they're passionate about." But sometimes they seem so young and hip and tech savvy that we are flummoxed by how to connect.
Email open rates have been slowly but steadily dropping across the nonprofit sector. If you've noticed the same with your email strategy, you're not alone. This doesn't mean you should stop sending emails. It just means you may just need to adjust your expectations and sharpen your messaging.
A lot of nonprofits swap lists of supporters, or buy and sell email addresses like intrigue-less intelligence agents. We strongly discourage that practice. Not only does it annoy your supporters, it backfires - filling inboxes with so many messages that yours then get lost in the noise.
