BSG Gifts President Mills With Student's Oyster Shell Sculpture

With a 14-year tenure as the president of a prestigious liberal arts college under his belt, the world will be President Barry Mills' oyster when he steps down from his position this spring. And the Bowdoin Student Government (BSG) won't let him forget it.

Students Launch New Theater Group, Donate First Ticket Sales to Local Nonprofits

This weekend Beyond the Proscenium premiered its first production: Spring Awakening, a German rock musical based on Frank Wedekind's eponymous 1891 play. Beyond the Proscenium - founded earlier this year and led by Emily Bungert '15, Sarah Guilbault '18, Cordelia Orbach '17 and Jae Yeon Yoo '18 - is a site-specific theatre group.

Students Analyze Alternative Spring Break Trips

Student participants of Alternative Spring Break trips gathered recently with faculty, peers and representatives from local agencies to explore opportunities for continued engagement in the social issues they investigated during their March break. The evening event was called Perspectives, the culminating event of the ASB program.

The Best Chili on Campus? Thorne Hosts Student Cook-off

Bowdoin students like it hot - at least when it comes to chili. Last night, the 11th Annual Doug Pollack Polar Chef Competition pitted student chef against student chef in a chili cook-off. Three teams - one from each dining hall and one from Smith Union - cooked up nine gallons of chili each, offering samples to diners who had to vote on their favorite recipe.

Bowdoin's Dr. Pols Enlightens Students on AIDS in the 21st Century

Though medical advances have largely displaced AIDS from the forefront of national concern, the disease continues to have a significant presence in the United States, according to Dr. Birgit Pols, Bowdoin's health services director. The rate of new HIV infections in the U.S. has been stable since the 1990s, despite increased awareness and prevention strategies.

As Maine temperatures dip to the single digits, many students feel as if they might as well be in the Arctic. Though a true polar expedition of the kind documented in the museum requires months of preparation - followed by months of grueling travel - last Friday's third annual Arctic Museum reception provided the next best thing.
