How Carol McBrady is Saving Zambia's Street Children

Street children are kids who spend most of the time in the streets. Some of them have families but come from households where there is extreme poverty, violence, and drug abuse. Others have no home but the streets. The UN estimates there are around 150 million street children worldwide but the exact numbers are unknown.

Loving The Unloved

Street children are boys and girls for whom streets have become home. While some are orphans, many have families but grew up in slum-like settlements in extreme poverty. According to the Institute for Security Studies, Zambia is one of the least developed countries in Africa and more than half of its population have less than $1.90 a day to spend.

In Lusaka's Matero Compound, Poverty Is the Main Barrier to Education

Although education is a basic human right, UNICEF estimates that in Zambia at least 800,000 children are out of school. The majority of them come from households living in extreme poverty, in slum-like settlements such as the Matero compound located in the country's capital Lusaka.
