Hi,
My name's Nathan, and I'm a technical writer based in the Kansas City area. I am a recent graduate of the University of Alabama in Huntsville's English master's program, where I also obtained a Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication. My bachelor's degree is in aerospace engineering from the University of Kansas.
My education has prepared me well for a career in tech writing and editing, as I have lots of exposure to technical engineering concepts as well as the skills to successfully communicate those ideas. I love writing and editing, and this site will showcase some of my work that best represents my skill set and interests.
I wanted to have a broad selection of my work, ranging from technical user guides and scientific infographics to research papers for my master's program to book reviews that I have written for the Society for Technical Communication. I really wanted to choose works that showcased some of the things in life I am passionate about: science and engineering, digital culture, and the study of mass media, for instance. I hope by reading these pieces you gain an understanding of who I am in addition to gauging my technical skills.
In addition to these projects, I also have numerous reports, newsletters, and user manuals that I have written for my job as a graduate research assistant at UAH. In this role, I was part of a collaboration program between UAH and the FBI known as the Hazardous Devices Tools and Technologies Unit. In this role, I wrote and edited documents about the disarmament and defusal of improvised explosive devices, but due to the sensitive nature of this work I am unable to share any of my projects publicly here.
Currently I work as a web copywriter for a Kansas City web design firm called Lifted Logic. In this role, I write all of the copy for clients building new websites with our firm. I am responsible for interviewing each client to understand their business, voice, and personality. Then I write all of their website's pages, focusing on representing the client and accurately describing their services. Most of the clients I write for are in the industrial or medical field, such as HVAC companies, medical practices, construction, and automotive supply.

I wrote all of the website content for Merrill Industrial Electric, a commercial electrician based out of Independence, Missouri.
I wrote all of the website copy for Rising Construction's new website. They are a construction subcontractor based in the Kansas City area.
Technical Documents
This guide was written for a participatory science text project. I was responsible for conducting a user survey of my intended audience to identify what issues they found the most significant, which I then worked into this guide.
This guide outlines ways for scientists to effectively use Reddit's r/Science platform to communicate scientific topics to wider audiences.
This report was written for the 2017 AIAA undergraduate space design competition. I, along with six other students, designed a theoretical first manned mission to Mars and compiled a technical report outlining the mission and many key design elements. My primary role was writing and editing the final report for submission. Though this is an older document, I included it because I feel that it highlights my focus on writing while at KU. And I should mention - our team won first place!
Research Papers
In this research paper, I investigated the ways that online memes have infiltrated the English language. I focus especially on how the website Reddit has trained a whole generation of users how to communicate through memes, and the impacts that this may have on the "real world" English language.
In this research paper, I investigated the nature of parody and intertextuality in the TV sitcom "The Simpsons". I specifically focused on one episode to highlight how the show has garnered a reputation for "predicting" future events through parody.
Book Reviews
I am a regular volunteer reviewer for the Society for Technical Communication's (STC) quarterly journal, Technical Communication. For their August 2023 issue, I reviewed Sharon Burton and Bonni Graham Gonzalez's book Engineering Words.
For the May 2023 issue of STC's Technical Communication journal, I reviewed Randall Munroe's book, What if? 2.
