Food Gatherers awarded its "Gatherer of Distinction" prize to Zingerman's Community of Businesses, the founders of Food Gatherers, for visionary leadership in fighting hunger in the community. U.S. Rep. John Dingell was on hand to congratulate recipients. "You are helping people who are down on their luck and who are having a bad time," Dingell said.
"There was a nice sense of synergy with other companies," said Jacob Mendel, 21, of Giant Eel Productions. Mendel will graduate this year from U of M. Most students were hoping the evening would yield more connections and investments to take their startups to the next level.

Mary Stiving didn't know she was making history when in 1942 she put away her dress, donned pants and went to work in the larger-than-life Willow Run B-24 Assembly Plant east of Ypsilanti.

Milan is not expected to receive Risk and Roads Reserve (RRR) funds for fixing Wabash Road within the city limits, while the Monroe County Road Commission is receiving funding for resurfacing Wabash Road beyond the city limits.
MILAN -- The Milan City Council accepted its audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. The report reflected the city is financially in good condition, but also showed some challenges ahead and “deficiencies in internal controls.”
SCHOOLS
Milan Area Schools ended the 2013-14 fiscal year with a positive bottom line of about $19,000 and a fund balance of 7.22 percent of the general budget. The district also received a boost from the state in the form of $175 extra in its per pupil foundation allowance.

Milan High School teacher Herb Morelock said he was surprised to get a call at home from some of his students over the winter break.
What started out as a project to put Milan's proud history on display through athletic banners became a year-long saga of transitioning the school's logo away from Native American imagery and our No. 10 story of 2012.
About 30 Milan residents filled the board room of the school district's administration offices Feb. 22 to voice their opinions on the issue of using Native American symbols and imagery in the district. The Milan Board of Education scheduled the discussion on the topic after it was brought up by resident James Farrar during a Feb.

Ann Arbor Dance Classics studio will bring "The Nutcracker and Holiday Celebration" to the stage 3 p.m. Dec. 11 at Milan High School. The original classic tale tells the story of a young girl, as she dreams of a Nutcracker Prince, a battle with a Mouse King and travel to a land of Sugar Plum Fairies.
