In North America, there are five distinct air masses. An air mass is an area of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. Air masses cover many hundreds or thousands of kilometres and adapt to the characteristics of the surface below them.
El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of what is known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. El Niño and La Niña are Spanish terms. El Niño means "The Little Boy" and La Niña means "The Little Girl".
