It doesn't happen often, but this year, the final night of Hanukkah lands on Christmas - Chrismukkah, if you will. But the first night begins at sundown on Sunday, December 18, and the menorah will be lit for eight consecutive nights. There will be latkes and other fried foods, like sweet sufganiyot - a type of jelly-filled donut.
Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, runs from Dec. 18-26 this year, chasing away the winter chill with nightly candle lighting and hearty meals with an emphasis on fried food. Restaurants and bakeries throughout the Chicago area are making celebrating easier by serving up traditional holiday fare like potato latkes and sufganiyot (fried jelly doughnuts) for dine-in or as part of to-go packages for gatherings at home.

AVONDALE - Most chefs making a roux for a Louisiana-style gumbo use white flour as a thickening agent - but not Chesaree Rollins. Rollins, the owner of new Avondale restaurant CheSa's Bistro & Bar, uses rice and corn flour to make a gumbo that's just as tasty, she said.

This coming Tuesday (aka Fat Tuesday) is Packzi Day in Chicago. In previous years, this meant cramming into a bakery with 6798 other people waiting to order these delicious Polish doughnuts. But it's 2022, so instead of standing six feet apart in a seven-mile-long line, you can just order your paczkis ahead of time at one of these 20 spots.
Paczki, pronounced "punch-key," are deep-fried sweet treats - not to be confused with donuts. And while a Jefferson Park bakery fries them up year-round, they're especially in high demand on Fat Tuesday, appropriately referred to by some as Paczki Day. "Paczek means one, paczki means many," explained Dobra Bielinski, who runs the Delightful Pastries bakery along with her family.
