Karla is a student journalist writing from New England attending the University of Connecticut pursuing bachelor's degrees in journalism and communications. She currently serves as the editor in chief at The Daily Campus. She has gained experience in the print/digital and broadcast journalism industries through her work at The Daily Campus and as an assignment desk and digital producer intern at NBC CT. For the 2025-2026 academic year, she will continue to work at NBC CT as a newsroom intern, gaining more experience in desk and digital work, and learning about producing and on-air reporting. Karla is also a member of the New York Times Corps class of 2026, a talent-mentorship pipeline program in which undergraduates students are paired with a Times reporter to gain valuable career guidance.
She has written local news stories about animal cruelty during a heatwave and an early voting site opening on a college campus. She also has experience in reporting on the fine arts such as stories about the Martha Graham Dance Company's performance at UConn, a puppet show and a student-run concert preview. She has also recently begun writing feature pieces, the most recent of which illustrating how a Sandy Hook survivor reclaimed her online identity after it being tainted by hoax conspiracists, and how she uses her trauma to fuel a legal career for gun policy reform.

From President Donald Trump's first day in office through July 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement made almost 400 arrests in Connecticut, according to the Deportation Data Project.
Attorney General William Tong in suing real estate sites Zillow and Redfin over a $100 million agreement, saying it's anticompetitive and could make rent prices rise. Four kittens were found abandoned in a sealed box and taken to Branford Compassion Club for rehabilitation on Tuesday. The small kittens, all about eight weeks old, were originally taken in by another animal shelter, but could not stay there because it had reached full capacity.
