Freelance Writer - Male Psychology / Changing Male Roles

Location icon United States

My writing has been published in a wide variety of publications including The New York Times, the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, BlueVirginia.us (the top political blog in Virginia for the Democratic Party), Mix: The Recording Industry Magazine, and Emory Magazine (the #1 university magazine in the U.S. in the '90s, when I was a staff writer there).
My writing and work have been covered by CNN, the Washington Post, Time magazine, USAToday, Redbook, Sirius radio, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. An article about my professional work in addictions counseling appeared in the annual report of Inova Health System, the top hospital chain in northern Virginia, where I worked for eight years. The CNN 3-minute video segment on me and my work is below, with print coverage as well.
I have also published my writing in small but key publications, including Flagpole - the top local-music publication in Athens, Georgia (a hotbed for rock-and-roll music in the 80s and 90s); Wingspan – the former leading publication of the 1990s surge in interest in male psychology triggered by poet/author Robert Bly and Jungian scholar James Hillman; and Man magazine out of Austin, Texas – also focused on male psychology.
I have studied writing at Yale; the University of California/Santa Cruz; Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where like Steve Jobs I was enrolled for only one semester (early 70s); the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference (Middlebury, Vermont); and the Squaw Valley Writer’s Conference (Lake Tahoe, California). I hold a master’s degree (MSW) in clinical and psychological social work from NYU.
I was formerly Director, User Interface Design, at Audiopoint.com, a dot-com era startup in Fairfax VA just outside Washington DC. I was also a consultant for Voxiva.com. For three years I was on the board of directors of Arlington Independent Media/WERA.fm in Arlington VA where I live, an award-winning television/radio/new-media nonprofit studio from which I have hosted dozens of Internet-radio interview programs, including those related to my project www.CanRockAndRollSaveAmerica.com, and to my career-counseling project, What Color Is Your Catapult?
I hold a U.S. patent for an Internet/cell-phone voice-communications concept, the VoiceRoundTable (U.S. Patent # 7,526,074 B2). I am not a tech professional but on the idea/marketing side. This group-communications tool was first used for conducting medical and psychological support groups. Audio segments were aired on Oprah Winfrey with Oprah doing the voiceovers.
I have been a member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association and have belonged to or been connected with Carl Jung societies in Atlanta, Massachusetts, and New York City.

Bisexuality - Media Coverage of My Writing and Conferences

CNN - Wolf Blitzer/Brian Todd
Secret Lives

As a clinical and psychological social worker, I conducted a nationwide conference program for bisexual men - a forum for the discussion of related life issues. CNN covered this program after NJ Gov James MacGreevey, married, came out as same-sex attracted.

Oprah Winfrey Show - Producer Dave Rivera

The Oprah Winfrey show featured three men from my bisexual discussion groups. Audio segments of statements from them were aired at the very beginning of a show on women married to men secretly involved with other men. Oprah herself did the voiceovers. To create these audio interviews, I worked for six or eight weeks with Oprah senior producer Dave Rivera. At this time I have been unable to find the video of the show or information about it, due to a computer crash and other tech problems,...

Mix: The Recording Industry Magazine
John Keane's Studio Grows with Athens' Music

Rock and roll is a powerful force for cultural change - a modern-day mythology in many ways, with a history of dramatic impact on male and female roles. A former music journalist, I often cite powerful lyrics from the rock and role arena, based on insights gained in researching and writing articles like this.

Reed College, Portland OR
My Reed College Transcript

Like Steve Jobs, I was enrolled at Reed College only one semester. I realized quickly I would not stay there long, and to get the largest refund, withdrew quickly, after starting - but also like Jobs stayed longer, as the college did not mind anyone sitting in on classes.
