De’jah Monai

Abstract Artist. Writer. Philosopher. Creative Architect.

United States

De’jah Monai is a 23 year old abstract artist, vegan, writer, and philosopher who wants to change the world though art and wellness. She uses art to heal (herself and others,) and to express her thoughts and theory to the world. Her art explicitly displays her abstract view of the world and humans. De’jah transmutes the raw reflection of her experiences through her artwork. She does this through different mediums: acrylic painting, poetry, branding, digital art, and fashion. The goal of her art is to “evoke an emotional response from viewers and make them dive deep.” She believes that combining art and wellness is a vehicle for social change within the blak community and the world.

Short Poem
Purple Sista

This short poem is a peak into the mind of the blak woman in my digital painting “Purpla Sista.” She got a new hairstyle is overthinking about what the white world will think about her purple hair, and by her surprise they were still more concerned about her skin. This poem allow readers to experience the anxieties that black women face with things that should be simple, like our hair just to be reminded that the issue of our hair is only skin deep.

Poem
Fall.on.Me

This poem was written based upon a past romantic relationship. It’s a slight exaggeration of the term “lean on me” instead, “fall on me,” is used to truly paint the picture of how sneakily co-dependency and trauma-ties can be present and residing right in front of you and under your nose.

Poem
The Shadows of the Rain

This poem explains and embodies liberation and embracing the beauty of pain. As colorful and magical as the colors of my abstract acrylic painting, “The Shadows of the Rain” are, they are also just as muted. I have been allowing myself to be muted. The goal is to challenge the reader’s emotions and allow them to be vulnerable.

Short Poem
Eyes Don’t Lie

This poem is the story behind my digital artwork “Eyes Dont Lie.” It is very short on purpose. It gets straight to the point. EYES DONT LIE! The eyes of people can tell you all you need to know.

Letter
Dear Mom

This piece is a heartfelt letter addressed to my late mother. ”Dear Mom” exemplifies my raw grief, love, resentment, and acceptance simultaneously—this is what real healing looks like: contrasting emotions, feelings and nostalgia all crashing into one another.

Poem
Blue Mother

This is a poem that dives into the meaning and inspiration behind my acrylic artwork called “Mother Nature is a Blak Woman.” “Blue Mother” speaks on resilience that blak women have which can be suffocating if we are not intentional about creating spaces and opportunities for us to breathe.

Short Poem
Blak Sunflowers

This is a short piece on the beauty of the growth of blak women, it is written based on my digital painting “Blak Sunflowers.” I have always admired the beauty of the evolution of blak women. When blak women pour into themselves and into others, they glow different, something like a sunflower—lighting up anyone’s day who walks by one, while also breathing like into the world and the Earth. The goal is to honor the essence of a blak woman.

Short Poem
Emotional Rollercoaster

This poem is based on my painting “Emotional Rollercoaster.”This poem shortly explains the hardest, but absolutely necessary decision that I needed to make to leave a relationship that I thought was everything. The goal is to liberate and relate to the reader and communicate that sometimes you have to fall into the unknown to find out what it is you’re contemplating, and regardless of the physical instant outcome, you will live! You will survive. Jump.
