Ildikó Enyedi’s Silent Friend, the Hungarian auteur’s most contemplative since the Oscar-nominated On Body and Soul, spends nearly two and a half hours making up for the oversight. Across three eras: 1908, 1972, and 2020, three passing visitors fall under the tree’s shadow and learn, separately and incompletely, to attend to what they cannot fully see. There is a certain brand of American indie filmmaking that premieres at Sundance almost pre-packaged in the visual grammar of “authenticity”: handheld cameras, muted palettes, sparse dialogue, aching silences, and a social issue to center around. On Tsui Hark's subversive reimagining of an immortal Chinese folk tale, starring Maggie Cheung as a giant serpent demon looking for love.
In the ever-intensifying dance between seen and being seen, where surveillance has become both a threat and an intimate gesture, Singaporean filmmaker Yeo Siew Hua continues to push cinematic boundaries.
I had the privilege of speaking with Tsui about the social textures of 1930s Shanghai, his inspirations from both Hollywood comedies and the Chinese Leftist Film Movement, his long and fruitful collaboration with composer James Wong, and his fascination with stories about mistaken identity. His answers are just as circuitous and paradoxical as his films: whimsical, melancholic, and full of energy. They not only offer us a way to look back at Shanghai Blues, but also a glimpse into the alchemy...
