Duha Hmidan

I am a journalist with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Birzeit University in Palestine and five years of professional experience in broadcast and visual reporting. My early work was produced in Palestine, where I reported closely with local communities and focused on stories centered on people, accountability, and public life. After relocating to the United States, I continued my journalism work while completing an academic year at Contra Costa College to strengthen my English-language reporting skills and understand how American newsrooms operate. I am currently a staff writer at The Advocate and am preparing to apply to the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

My reporting centers on community voices and public-interest issues. I have covered education policy in California using data, examined free expression and its limits in the American context, and reported on the social and economic impact of policies on less-resourced communities. I work across formats and adapt quickly to new editorial environments, including AP Style and U.S. newsroom standards. My goal is to produce clear, accurate journalism that documents lived experiences and holds institutions accountable.
