TheWrap Reported Feature Stories
"Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical" director Matthew Warchus didn't particularly enjoy school until he got to university, and that's when he discovered what he wanted to do with his life.
When actress Lashana Lynch took on the role of Miss Honey in Netflix's "Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical," she found herself immersed in the part in ways she didn't quite expect. "I stepped so far into Miss Honey that I started to worry about the children's mental health," she told TheWrap in a recent interview, referring to the contentious dynamic between Miss Honey and Emma Thompson's evil Miss Trunchbull.
Actress and singer Naomi Ackie credits dialect coaches Tangela Large, Bridgette Jackson and Denise Woods with helping her immerse herself in the voice of the one and only Whitney Houston for the biopic "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and says nailing down Houston's speaking voice was the key to inhabiting the role - especially since Ackie is English.
Netflix's "Firefly Lane" captures a friendship that transcends the obstacles of distance, age and time as well as all kinds of rifts, arguments and betrayals ( for the most part).
A core musical moment in Sean Anders' Apple TV+ "Christmas Carol" riff "Spirited" involves Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell repeatedly hurling the same insult at strangers set to song and dance in Dickensian London, and as it turns out, the whole thing was Reynolds' idea.
Producer of "Something From Tiffany's" Lauren Neustadter credits costars Kendrick Sampson ("Insecure") and Zoey Deutch ("Not Okay," "Set It Up"), as well as casting director Ronna Kress, with transforming the story of the film, adapted from Melissa Hill's book that came out over a decade ago.
When "Firefly Lane" co-executive producer and author of the novel Kristin Hannah met with the TV adaptation's creator Maggie Friedman, she gave her two pointers on the core of the story, which chronicles the ever-evolving friendship between quirky, methodical Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and bold, ambitious Tallulah 'Tully' Hart.
Opposites often attract in the best of friendships, and that's true of the sweeping tale of Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) in the Netflix series "Firefly Lane," adapted from the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah.
"Firefly Lane" Season 2 Part 1 marks the beginning of the end of the Netflix series' adaptation of Kristin Hannah's best-selling 2008 novel, closing on quite the cliffhanger before we see how the story ends in Part 2 sometime in 2023. And for creator Maggie Friedman, this was the ideal way to close out this adaptation.
"The School for Good and Evil" author Soman Chainani took inspiration for his narration point of view from the one and only Taylor Swift. "I, growing up was super over-emotional, especially when it came to romance and boys and all those things," he told TheWrap in an interview.
After Netflix released its adaptation of "The School for Good and Evil," author of the bestselling book series Soman Chainani is hopeful a sequel film is possible, but he noted a decision likely won't be made for some time. "There's no news either way.
"The School for Good and Evil" author Soman Chainani had the chance to step into the world (and castle) he constructed in a creative cameo appearance similar to that of Jenny Han in the adaptations of two of her beloved trilogies "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" and "The Summer I Turned Pretty."
Before donning Superman's cape once more, Henry Cavill reprised a different, but also well-known role with quite the fandom - Sherlock Holmes. In Netflix's "Enola Holmes 2," Cavill portrays Sherlock, but as seen through the lens of his younger sister Enola (Millie Bobby Brown), who stars in the sequel.
Jemele Hill's memoir "Uphill" just came out, but she has yet another major project on the horizon: a documentary about professional football player Colin Kaepernick that she is producing. And she predicts when the film is released, "a lot" of people will be embarrassed by how they treated Kaepernick.
Journalist Jemele Hill takes no satisfaction in having called former president Donald Trump a white supremacist ahead of the curve. "While, I guess on one hand, you could I guess say that I should take some level of 'I told you so' into this, I don't really see it that way," Hill told TheWrap during a recent interview.
Sports columnist and broadcaster Jemele Hill would still choose journalism as a job today even knowing what she knows now, but when it comes to the state of journalism, she's disappointed. "Writing and storytelling is all I ever wanted to do.
As if the ending of "Enola Holmes 2" isn't complicated enough, the film's post-credits scene sets up an entirely new wrinkle to the franchise - albeit an exciting one. For context, Sherlock battles a sense of loneliness throughout the film, and Enola recognizes this.
"Enola Holmes 2" ends by pulling out all the stops. The Sherlock siblings collide when their cases overlap, something Sherlock reveals about halfway through the film, and there is not one but two antagonists who reveal themselves at the end of the movie.
"The Storied Life of AJ Fikry" is the first of Gabrielle Zevin's novels to be adapted for English-language movie theaters (and is now streaming on Prime Video).
For "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" star Winslow Fegley, the main reason folks should see the adaptation of the beloved children's book is, put simply, it makes you happy. "I guess I think that when you watch 'Lyle,' and when you see the movie, it's so happy.
Showrunner and co-creator Attica Locke repeatedly persuaded her sister Tembi to write down her one-of-a-kind love story in memoir form, which eventually became the New York Times bestselling book "From Scratch," and now that memoir is a tremendously popular Netflix series.
In cinematographer James Kniest's eyes, psychology is the hidden element that makes a show like "The Midnight Club" spooky, along with other more obvious ingredients like a haunted hospice house, spiritual and religious symbols, the occult and, of course, the classic jump scare.
The new Netflix series "From Scratch" tells a fictionalized account of author Tembi Locke's real life story - one of love, loss, family, food and fighting for all of those things across multiple cultures, races and geographical locations like Los Angeles, California and Sicily, Italy.
Brett Gelman's favorite childhood film was the first "Muppets" movie, but it took him a second to narrow down his selection when TheWrap asked the "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" star what film he was obsessed with as a kid. " Let me pick one. Well, let me pick a children's movie.
Chiara Aurelia's initial reaction to reading the script for the R-rated "Luckiest Girl Alive" film adaptation of the novel by Jessica Knoll was one of terror. But that drew her even closer to the material.
Lyle the crocodile is not meant to be judged by his exterior, just like Bernard Waber's childrens book from which he originated. If both were judged by their covers, readers and viewers would surely miss out. "We made the movie because we loved the book," said director Josh Gordon in an interview with TheWrap.
Director Lena Dunham detailed a ten-year process of getting "Catherine Called Birdy," based on her favorite book since the age of 10, made into a film. "Before I even understood that there were people whose job it was to make movies, I thought, I wish that was a movie," Dunham told TheWrap in a recent interview.
Note: The following contains spoilers for the "Luckiest Girl Alive" ending. Do not read until after you've seen the film. Just because author Jessica Knoll adapted her own book "Luckiest Girl Alive" for the Netflix movie doesn't mean she didn't make some changes - including to the ending.
Director Lena Dunham described Karen Cushman's "Catherine Called Birdy" as a work ingrained in her DNA with a world easy to bring to the screen and populate, but she did want to give the story a more hopeful ending.
After voicing a CGI singing crocodile named Lyle, Shawn Mendes definitely has dreams to act in live-action form. "It's a terrifying place because it's something I've never done truly before," the Grammy-nominated artist told TheWrap in a recent interview.
Over a month ago, Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson's new "A League of Their Own" television series premiered on Amazon Prime Video, and while no news of a renewal for a second season has been released yet, Jacobson is grateful that the work she started in 2018 has finally made it to the small screen.
"Do Revenge" was in jeopardy of losing one or both of its stars when a twist of fate allowed director Jennifer Kaitlyn Robinson to cast her dream performers. In fact, she was able to move production to Atlanta a month before filming began in order to keep Maya Hawke, who was filming "Stranger Things" Season 4 at the time, as antagonist Eleanor in the film.
Maya Hawke's role in Netflix's new teen dark comedy "Do Revenge" is nothing short of central and dynamic, but she feels the messiness of her character Eleanor reflects the realities of teen life in high school.
The Hitchcockian Netflix movie "Do Revenge" contains several twists and turns, even by "Strangers on a Train" standards. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson describes Hitchcock's classic "Strangers on a Train" as one source of inspiration for "Do Revenge," which stars Camila Mendes, Maya Hawke, Austin Abrams and many more famous young faces.
Austin Abrams' character Max Broussard in "Do Revenge" could not be more different from his role in "Euphoria" as Ethan Lewis. And for a little bit, Abrams went back and forth between shooting the new Netflix movie (now streaming) and Season 2 of Sam Levinson's HBO drama.
Though his face is now associated with Amazon Prime Video's show of the summer, "The Summer I Turned Pretty", actor Christopher Briney will also appear in TIFF's closing night film "Dalíland" alongside Sir Ben Kingsley, Barbara Sukowa, Ezra Miller, Suki Waterhouse and more. Directed by Mary Harron, from a screenplay by John C.
D'Arcy Carden knew her good friend and comedic colleague Abbi Jacobson was working on a series adaptation of "A League of Their Own," but she wasn't sure she would be involved at all. "I was so happy for [Abbi] and I had this underlying jealousy because it just was like, 'Oh, God, what a project.
"A League of Their Own" series co-creator Will Graham has big plans for Season 2 (as previously mentioned to TheWrap), and if the show continues to root itself in historical events from the real All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, there is plenty more story to tell. "We're already working on the storyboard.
Molly Ephraim rounds the bases in Prime Video's small screen adaptation of "A League of Their Own" as both an important outfielder as well as a crucial comedic actress on the team of eight women who find themselves bonded by their first season in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball Team on the Rockford Peaches.
Lili Reinhart doesn't want viewers of "Look Both Ways" to think that one of her character's split storylines is the correct choice or 'better than the other path.' "You can obviously walk away from the film thinking 'Oh, I really resonated with that path' or 'I really resonated with that one,' but we wanted to make sure that one wasn't a clear 'Ding, ding, ding!
As the few international players on the field, Lupe García (Roberta Colindrez), Jess McCready (Kelly McCormack) and Esti González (Priscilla Delgado) form a friendship that shares its ups and downs in Amazon Prime Video's "A League of Their Own."
Actress and producer Lili Reinhart wants to make clear that her latest film "Look Both Ways" champions the balance between new parenthood and career ambitions. In the Netflix film, starring Reinhart alongside "Top Gun: Maverick" breakout Danny Ramirez, Reinhart's character lives two very different lives, one of which involves the life-changing decision of carrying a pregnancy to term.
Prime Video's "A League of Their Own" tackles many themes, but one in particular that comes up, again and again, is female friendship - and that theme truly takes center stage in the series' emotional finale episode.
Honoring Penny Marshall's 1992 film, Prime Video's new "A League of Their Own" series replicates the movie's dual narrative in a new way. Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson) and Max Chapman (Chanté Adams) do not share the bond of sisterhood like the original film's Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty), but their love of baseball brings them together in the show and allows them to connect over their shared queer identities.
The new Prime Video series "A League of Their Own" acknowledges Penny Marshall's 1992 hit film of the same name while deepening the story. While Marshall's movie very much tackled misogynistic attitudes towards women playing baseball, it didn't have the scope of diversity that the new series establishes, especially when it comes to exploring issues related to race and sexual orientation with the All American Girls Professional Baseball League players.
Which of the stars of Ted Lasso actually play soccer in real life? Brett Goldstein, Cristo Fernández and more reveal how much of what you see onscreen is really them.
"Dead to Me" and "Sneakerella" director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum resonated with many of the themes in the complex story of Netflix's romantic drama "Purple Hearts," but when the project first came to her, it had a radically different point of view. "The script came to me four years ago, and it was a bit different.
MAJOR SPOILER ALERT for "Where the Crawdads Sing!" If you haven't seen the movie or want to read the book, steer clear! A central question of "Where the Crawdads Sing," adapted to film from Delia Owen's popular novel, is: Who killed Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson)?
Two foundational characters in the hit comedy series "Ted Lasso," AFC Richmond's Director of Football Operations Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift) and former journalist of The Independent Trent Crimm (James Lance) left off with very different endings to Season 2.
Cristo Fernández, who portrays the happy-go-lucky Dani Rojas in Apple TV+'s "Ted Lasso," has not one, but two favorite soccer scenes he has filmed so far. "The first one is when Dani Rojas first enters in the show," he told TheWrap at the Apple FYC carpet and panel discussion Monday.
When asked to descibe "Ted Lasso" Season 3 in three words, actor Toheeb Jimoh chose "growth, resolution and family." "I want to pick my three words very carefully," he said. "I think growth is a big one. Resolution is a big one, and ... family."
"Ted Lasso" last left off on quite a predicament for Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) after Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) told her he loved her and then Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) tried to book a trip for them but she declined because she is about to start her own PR firm.
Comedic actor and writer Brett Goldstein, known for his role of Roy Kent in Apple TV+'s "Ted Lasso," and now the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hercules, could see these two characters he embodies being friends. After taking time to think about it, he told TheWrap that they would do so "grudgingly."
By the end of filming "Where the Crawdads Sing," actress Daisy Edgar-Jones' co-star Taylor John Smith commented on how Jones' book looked like it had been through a paper shredder.
A CGI blue heron takes flight at the beginning of "Where the Crawdads Sing," giving viewers a glimpse of the vast wetlands in which the film adaptation of Delia Owens' novel is set. "We worked with a fantastic company," director Olivia Newman told TheWrap in a recent interview about the film.
"Where the Crawdads Sing" leveled up from its already high standing in the world of pop culture when singer/songwriter Taylor Swift announced that she had written a song that would be featured in the film adaptation. But what fans didn't know was Swift wrote the song before production on the film had even begun.
Nonprofit Outfest is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the kickoff of its 2022 edition on July 11, when the annual Los Angeles LGBTQ+ film festival will launch with new awards, programming and a lineup of over 200 screenings.
Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder, the stars of Netflix's "Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between," agree on the very human themes present in their new rom-com. Based on Jennifer E.
Almost everyone can identify with the "make or break" moment in a relationship, which makes the new Netflix film "Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between" nearly universal in its potential reach - the film's entire plot revolves around that crucial moment.
Prime Video's "The Summer I Turned Pretty" is set to make a splash, and maybe even some waves, with author Jenny Han having adapted the first book of her beloved trilogy into a new TV series - which has already been renewed for a second season.
Another Jenny Han adaptation has officially graced the small screen. "The Summer I Turned Pretty" began streaming Friday on Amazon Prime Video. It tells the story of a love triangle between three teenagers who have known each other practically their entire lives.
As soon as filmmaker Sofia Alvarez read the Sarah Dessen novel "Along for the Ride," she immediately envisioned a movie adaptation. "I really grew up loving those summer teen movies where you could feel the weather or like you could feel the air conditioning was too cold," Alvarez told TheWrap during an interview about her film adaptation, which she wrote and directed.
In the new Netflix feature film adaptation of "Along for the Ride," based on the novel by author Sarah Dessen, stars Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli fell into a pretty natural rhythm of acting out their characters' budding relationship. But one thing the actor and actress were not on the same page about was the food fight scene.
For writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, "Crush" crucially moves past the coming out stage of queer life and into the part where those who have come out can be themselves. The co-writers, who both identify as queer, started working on the project after meeting at BuzzFeed in 2018 and starting a queer writers group.
In Hulu's new queer rom-com "Crush," actress Isabella Ferreira got the chance to fulfill a dream of hers from when she was young: playing the popular girl in school. "I've always wanted to play the popular girl just because I never saw a lot of Latinas playing that when I was younger," Ferreira told TheWrap in a recent interview about the original film, which is now streaming on Hulu.
The penultimate episode of Apple TV+'s "Pachinko" steps away from central character Sunja's narrative to give a glimpse into Hansu's past. Episode 7, directed by Kogonada and written by Ethan Kuperberg and Soo Hugh, delves deeper into the narrative of Hansu (Lee Min-ho), and TheWrap spoke with the filmmakers and Lee Min-ho about bringing the episode (which invents a new storyline not found in Min Jin Lee's source material) to life.
Lack of familiarity with the cultural context of "Pachinko" helped cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister in his approach to framing the show, which is currently rolling out new episodes weekly on Apple TV+ to critical acclaim.
The ambitious Apple TV+ series "Pachinko" took 20 historical consultants from the United States, Korea and Japan, numerous translators, seven executive producers, two directors, two directors of photography, and 637 cast members to put together - 95% of whom are Asian.
After making three "To All the Boys" movies back-to-back, actress Lana Condor wasn't exactly anti-romantic comedy but was certainly looking for something different. Enter "Moonshot," an original film that blends the sci-fi and rom-com genres to delightful effect. "I had honestly just never seen anything like [it] cross my desk," Condor told TheWrap in a recent interview about her new film.
When "Pachinko" showrunner and creator Soo Hugh was first sent the book on which the show is based while she was working on the AMC series "The Terror," her initial reaction was one of hesitation.
The first season of "The Gilded Age" has drawn to a close, but not without leaving some loose threads to pick up in Season 2.
Roberto Bentivegna, co-writer for the Ridley Scott-directed "House of Gucci," developed most of the script over Zoom when he was stuck in Colombia during the onset of the pandemic. And yet, for a virtual screenwriting experience, it went off without a hitch. "The process was very smooth," Bentivegna told TheWrap about the process of writing the script.
There is no shortage of complex female characters who stand up for their beliefs in the HBO period drama "The Gilded Age." Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) paves her own path as an aspiring Black writer and journalist.
Peggy Scott's character truly blossoms in "The Gilded Age" Episode 4, which shines a greater light on Scott's home life and in turn Black American life during the titular era. The HBO drama series hails from "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, but actress Denée Benton previously told TheWrap that as early as the audition process she was asked for her input on the show's portrayal of Black characters.
Joey King stars as a teenager dealing with young love and loss in the new Paramount+ original film "The In Between." But this is no ordinary romance. Yes, it's a film that explores first love, but it also explores a second chance courtesy of a supernatural twist.
Actress Joey King was approached to star in the new Paramount+ original film "The In Between" - a story about first love, loss and an epic romance - before it had even been fully written. "Our writer Marc Klein came to me and my team with this idea," King told TheWrap during a recent interview.
The whimsy and imagination of a film like "The Sky Is Everywhere" is all the more impressive knowing that production took place during COVID and during California wildfire season, offering unique challenges to getting the story onscreen. "It's like two competing crises," director Josephine Decker recalled in a recent interview with TheWrap.
With a setting of late 1800s America, "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellows' new drama series "The Gilded Age" tackles racial politics in a way his previous series did not. But when it came to crafting the show's central Black character Peggy Scott, the actress filling the role was granted the opportunity to chime in when and where she felt the scripts may have fallen short.
Harper Lambert and I condensed a longer Q and A interview we conducted with "House of Gucci" costume designer Janty Yates to include in TheWrap's Below the Line Magazine before the 2022 Oscars.
"Scandal" alum Darby Stanchfield relied on instinct and natural cast chemistry to build out her character, Nina Locke, in the Netflix original series "Locke & Key." "For me, building Nina Locke and finding this character primarily has to do with my connection to the other actors, specifically the actors that play my kids and husband ...
As a journalist at Virginia's Roanoke Times, Beth Macy saw the devastation of America's opioid overdose epidemic - and reported on it - long before it hit the national news. As a writer and producer on Hulu's new show, "Dopesick," based on her 2018 book of the same name, she hopes the adaptation will carry a message to Americans about opioid use disorder.
