More than 52,000 Canadians travelled abroad for health care last year, study finds

The number of Canadian patients who travelled abroad in 2014 to receive non-emergency medical treatment increased 25% from 2013, according to a study conducted by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian independent research and education organization. In 2014, 52,513 Canadians travelled beyond our borders to seek medical treatment, compared with 41,838 in 2013.

Report calls for fast, modernized access to gov't information

Criticizing the current system as "a culture of delay," federal information commissioner Suzanne Legault on Tuesday tabled her special report to modernize the Access to Information Act. After two years of consultations and study of international access laws, Legault introduced 85 recommendations that, if implemented, would help fix an act that has become "a shield against transparency."

Bill C-51 'threatens balance' between risk and privacy, law group says

The Canadian Bar Association is challenging the federal government on its contentious proposed anti-terror legislation, asking whether Bill C-51 is striking a proper balance between managing risk and safeguarding the privacy rights of Canadian citizens. More rail inspectors needed, Commons committee says

Transport Canada must ensure it has an "adequate" number of safety inspectors to oversee the rail transportation of dangerous goods, a House of Commons committee said Thursday. The recommendation was among 10 in a report from the House Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, which examined how dangerous material is moved by all modes of transport.

Conservatives propose 4 changes to anti-terror bill

The proposals include wording changes to address concerns raised by Aboriginal groups, environmentalists and civil liberties advocates, who feared that civil disobedience could fall under the bill's wide provisions. There will also be changes to narrow the language that allows federal agencies to share collected information, and clarity around the proposed "no-fly" list and the power of arrest.

Montreal MP Massimo Pacetti, one of two suspended Liberal MPs at the heart of misconduct allegations, says he will not seek re-election. Pacetti and Newfoundland MP Scott Andrews were suspended last November from the Liberal caucus by Leader Justin Trudeau after allegations against them by two unnamed female New Democrat MPs.
