The 93rd Academy Awards were always going to be very different. And they were just about as good as they could have been, given the context of Covid. There were obvious, physical changes to the ceremony, such as staging the awards themselves at a different venue - a train station - with far fewer people present and nominees popping up around the world at live camera points.
The first Oscars to go ahead without a host since 1989 was an unqualified success - the best ceremony in years, packed with memorable moments and for (nearly) all the right reasons.
The other letter was from some 17 Hollywood figures - including Julie Andrews, Paul Newman, Billy Wilder, Sidney Lumet and former Academy president Gregory Peck - which denounced what happened at the Shrine as "demeaning" and "an embarrassment to both the Academy and the entire motion picture industry."
The first episode of Ant And Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway to air since Ant McPartlin was charged with drink driving has been broadcast. We already knew - from a tweeted image of the script - that the title wasn't changing. But how would Dec do presenting without his on-screen partner of 30 years, Ant McPartlin?
Forget leading actor and actress, here are some alternative award categories from Sunday evening's ceremony that deserve an honourable mention. The opening monologue is always the biggest part of the Oscar host's job, as it has to spin several plates: be funny, but not gratuitously offensive; address politics, but not alienate a mass audience.
DJ Robert Miles has died at the age of 47 . The track that defined his career, Children, was one of the biggest-selling instrumentals in Europe and inspired a whole new genre. But Miles had an unusual motivation for it - helping to tackle "Saturday night slaughter" on Italy's roads.
Critics often say that the best picture Oscar goes to the wrong film. But the 2017 Oscars will forever be remembered as the year it literally did. Until the very last award, the Oscars, hosted by first-timer Jimmy Kimmel with an all-new production team, had been pretty much as expected - political, long and often funny, but with some set-pieces that really tested the patience.
Chris Rock put in the performance of his life as host of the 88th Academy Awards - and transformed what had threatened to be the most controversial of ceremonies into one of the very best.
Neil Patrick Harris' debut turn as Oscars host was one of the most forgettable for years - although one moment will define him forever. Just as David Letterman had his painfully awkward "Uma, Oprah" routine and Seth Macfarlane his catastrophically misjudged song We Saw Your Boobs, Harris will be recalled mostly as the guy who presented in his pants.
Ellen DeGeneres' return as Oscars host will be remembered for three things - a picture, a prediction and a lot of pizza. She previously presented in 2007, when Twitter was in its comparative infancy. Though the world has long since been in the social media age, it was only with this edition that the Oscars finally caught up, their host Tweeting as she presented.
For many of their 71 years, the Golden Globes have been mostly thought of as not too much more than a big party and a kind of vague pointer to the Oscars, where the real business is.
Early on in the 2013 Oscars ceremony, host Seth MacFarlane was interrupted by William Shatner, playing a "from the future" Captain Kirk - who showed him a succession of supposed headlines pulled from show "reviews" taken from the next day's papers, describing him as the "worst host ever."
As is clear from the fact he has now hosted more times than anyone bar Bob Hope, no-one alive knows how to work the Oscars audience better than Billy Crystal. Last year, the show's producers paired James Franco and Anne Hathaway as hosts in an attempt to appeal to a younger audience.
Acting duo James Franco and Anne Hathaway fail to find a spark as they take on the job of hosting the Academy Awards.
In Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, the 82nd Academy Awards featured the first presenting duo since 1957. How successful was it? Well, while their onstage energy was for the most part fine - once a slightly stilted start was negotiated - the schisms in the writing were less easily overcome.
It was a fresh presenter and a fresh approach for the 81st Academy Awards. But how much difference did it make? We had been promised a transformed show this year, not least because it was time for a new host.
