I am a writer and editor currently employed as a senior social media specialist for a healthcare system located primarily in the Midwest U.S. I worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers for a decade and for a Texas law magazine for five years.

Kristina "Krisi" Kastl, a personal injury attorney and founder of Kastl Law, was elected as 113th president of the Dallas Bar Association, or DBA, on January 22, 2022. She has served on the DBA Board of Directors for many years and previously served as president of the Dallas Women Lawyers Association in 2011 and the Texas Women Lawyers from 2018 to 2019.
The San Antonio Bar Foundation elected 27 fellows to its 2022 class. Selection as a foundation fellow is by nomination only and is restricted to members of the San Antonio Bar Association. Fellows must demonstrate professional achievement, an exemplary reputation, and commitment to the legal community.
State Bar of Texas past President Allan DuBois, 76, died January 9, 2022, in San Antonio. He served as president of the State Bar of Texas from 2015 to 2016, focusing his efforts on raising awareness of the Texas Lawyers' Assistance Program and funding for the Sheeran-Crowley Memorial Trust, which provides financial help to Texas attorneys, judges, and law students who need treatment for substance use, depression, and other mental health issues.
Genora K. Boykins was elected chair of the South Texas College of Law Houston Board of Directors at a board meeting on December 8. She is the first woman and first African American to serve as board chair. Boykins succeeds J. Ken Johnson, who served as board chair from 2014 to 2021.
St. Mary's University School of Law received a $1.8 million gift from an anonymous donor to benefit scholarships for students. The gift is an estate gift pledge of $800,000 toward an existing endowed scholarship for law students and $1 million to create a new endowed scholarship for female law students.
The Texas Supreme Court named Harriet Miers, a partner in Locke Lord in Dallas and Washington, D.C., as the new chair of the Texas Access to Justice Commission, effective January 1, 2022. Harry Reasoner, who has served as chair for 12 years, will serve as chair emeritus.
Megan LaVoie has been appointed Office of Court Administration administrative director effective December 1. LaVoie replaces Interim Administrative Director Mena Ramón, who has been serving in the role since August 2021 when David Slayton left the position to become vice president of court consulting services for the National Center for State Courts.
"The Houston Bar Association, in collaboration with our committed members, generous underwriters, and partnership with the Houston Bar Foundation, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, and the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary, proudly hold the annual Harvest Celebration to raise funds with one goal in mind-to give people hope to providing a qualified volunteer lawyer and access to the legal system so that justice may always be served," HBA President Jennifer Hasley said in a press release.
Baylor Law School's Veterans Clinic honored attorneys Gavin Lane and Darren Obenoskey, both of Waco, with its Advocate of the Year Awards on November 5. The awards are annually given to volunteer attorneys who go above and beyond in pro bono legal service to central Texas veterans and their spouses.
The Texas Bar Foundation awarded South Texas College of Law Houston a $25,000 grant to support the law school's pro bono clinic. The grant provides stipends to "qualified, unlicensed law school graduates" to assist tenants in fighting evictions and maintaining housing stability.
State Bar of Texas Past President Charles F. Aycock, of Amarillo, died November 9, 2021. He received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1967. Aycock served as president of the State Bar of Texas from 1999-2000.
A coalition was formed to help greater Houston area residents who need legal assistance regarding evictions after the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act's eviction protection expired on July 26.
