Journalism is notorious for its lack of diversity, and recent figures have shown that progress on increasing the number of black and minority ethnic journalists continues to be far too slow. At the same time, women are still under-represented in senior positions, and the Guardian's recent and ongoing series The Web We Want highlighted some of the abuse facing black contributors and women contributors.

Cross-party critics slam parkrun charge as local 'health tax'

When Stoke Gifford parish council decided to start charging people taking part in parkrun, a weekly fun run in Little Stoke park, it received widespread condemnation. Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the council to revoke the charge, and even Paula Radcliffe waded in to criticise the move.

Sian Blake: three bodies found in search for ex-EastEnders actor and children

Three bodies have been found in the hunt for the missing former EastEnders actor Sian Blake and her two children, and police are now treating the case as a murder inquiry. The bodies were found in the garden of Blake's home in Erith, south-east London, and have not been formally identified.

Former News International chief: 'Disturbing' decision to hand over sources undermined...

Former News International chief executive Tom Mockridge has said that the company undermined the "principles of journalism" by handing over details of confidential sources to the police. In an interview with the Financial Times Mockridge, currently chief executive of Virgin Media, said News Corporation's actions were "disturbing".

Journalism Diversity Fund bestows its 200th NTCJ bursary

The Journalism Diversity Fund has sponsored 200 minority trainee journalists since its launch in 2005. The fund has provided four more students, who lack the means to pay for an NTCJ-accredited course and are socially or ethnically diverse, with a bursary that pays for their course fees and supplies a subsistence allowance for the year.

Morrissey wins award for bad sex writing in his debut novel

Having collected many music awards in his day, Morrissey moves onto the sex category Former Smiths frontman Morrissey has been awarded the Bad Sex in Fiction prize for his debut book. The singer's novel List of the Lost picked up the dubious honour for his terrible phrases including 'bulbous salutation'.
