I am a practising Muslim. I pray five times a day to strengthen my spiritual connection to Allah, so the concept of marriage has always been a huge religious commitment for me. A "hadith", which is a saying of the prophet, that I refer back to, says that marriage is half your "deen" (religion).
To vote or to not vote? In the British Muslim community, this subject always prompts intense, spirited debate. I pose the question to my family group chat, made up of relatives spanning three generations, from my great uncles in their 70s to teenage cousins. "What does everyone think of voting?", I ask.
Voter turnouts in young people aged 18-24 have been steadily decreasing over the years. In the 2019 general elections, the voter turnout was 47%, decreasing by 7% from the previous general election.
What I love about being British, or at least how I see Britishness, is how we constantly shift and grow to allow different communities and cultures to nurture what it means to be British.
