Before returning to writing, Kaarina spent 16 years with the Canadian federal government, including six years as an executive. She recently earned a master of journalism degree from the University of King's College. She also holds a master’s degree in environmental studies and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science.

If carbon capture ever gets going in Ontario, where will we put it all?

The Ontario government is proposing legislative changes that would open the door to storing carbon dioxide underground in the province, but it's unclear where the captured greenhouse gas would go. In a discussion paper released in January, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry proposes allowing carbon dioxide storage on Crown land.

Federal Court of Appeal tells Canada's pesticide regulator to reconsider public objections on...

The Federal Court of Appeal has ruled Canada's pesticide regulator must justify its decision to dismiss public health concerns about glyphosate after reapproving the controversial pesticide for use. Justice Marianne Rivoalen said a decision by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to dismiss food safety concerns was unreasonable because it doesn't explain how the decision was made.

Ontario cities call for clean electricity

Despite pleas from 32 municipalities to phase out gas-fired electricity generation, the Ontario government is doubling down on the role of natural gas in keeping the province's lights on. The provincial government plans to ramp up gas-fired generation to meet new demand and replace electricity from the Pickering nuclear station when it closes in 2024.
