A Prayer in the Night: An immigrant seeks refuge and a new life in Auburn

He remembers "the first day of hell" perfectly. It was the early '90s when grandpa gave 5-year-old Zacarías a machete. "You're old enough now," his grandfather said to him. "Go on and get to work." Little Zacarías grabbed the machete and with all his scrawny, malnourished strength, hacked away at the coffee plants.

'Step in the right direction': Oakland City Council passes new policy on warrant-less searches

When the Oakland City Council approved a new policy this week to limit warrant-less searches by police on parolees and probationers, Katie Dixon thought of her two brothers, both recently released from prison. "They're just beginning their journey with parole," said Dixon, who is a policy fellow at Prisoners with Children, an organization in Oakland focused on restoring rights for incarcerated individuals.

Archivists detail how Gov. Ivey audio was found

Before Gov. Kay Ivey acknowledged she wore blackface - while maintaining that she did not recall the racist skit of her doing so - Auburn University Libraries Special Collections and Archives Department was going through tape reels from the '60s, digitizing their contents, when they stumbled upon one with the label: "Student Reflections on BSU Night Kay Ivey, Ben LaRavia."

Neighbors recall night of alleged murder involving 16-year-old

The gray Nissan, slightly rusted at the edges, still sits in the driveway of a suburban neighborhood. There, last Thursday night, Martha White Jones, 66, was shot and killed by her soon-to-be stepson, according to an affidavit. The Nissan, neighbors said, belonged to Jones.
