GEORGETOWN - In 2017, the city of Georgetown elected its first Black mayor, Brendon Barber. And in 2021, it could elect its first-ever woman and Republican mayor, Carol Jayroe. GEORGETOWN - The FBI has launched an investigation into finances at the now-closed Tara Hall Home for Boys in Georgetown County, an agency spokesman confirmed. FBI spokesman Donald Wood declined to reveal any details, but an August incident report filed by group home for homeless boys with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office accused an ex-employee of embezzlement.
GEORGETOWN - Georgetown County's population grew by 5.4% over the past decade, while its main two cities shrank with a drop in Black residents, according to new U.S. Census data. This growth is happening mostly in the Waccamaw Neck's beach communities, Pawleys Island and Litchfield.

What is apparent to the 39-year-old, though, is what he would do to fix them if elected in November: push for economic development and expand Medicaid on Day One in office.
PLANTERSVILLE - More than 450 housing units and 4 acres of commercial land could come to an undeveloped area on North Fraser Street just before Plantersville Road. Georgetown County planning commission will hear a request on August 19 to rezone 238 acres of general commercial and forest agriculture land near Plantersville to a planned development.
MURRELLS INLET - Close to the county line in Murrells Inlet the morning of July 28, Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce helped break ground for a new $45 million senior living facility called Magonlia Bridge.
PAWLEYS ISLAND - Georgetown County Council may not have discussed rezoning plans along Ocean Highway on July 27, but that did not stop two people from telling council not to move it forward during public comment. Nearly 70 residents of the Waccamaw Neck emailed Georgetown County's planning department in the last few weeks speaking out against the rezoning.
GEORGETOWN - A proposed RV resort in Georgetown off of S.C. 521 between Georgetown and Andrews is said to help Georgetown County capitalize on the tourism industry's shift to more transient campers, according to a real estate development company on the project.
MURRELLS INLET - In a key, unanimous Georgetown County Council vote July 27, local brewery Quigley's Pint & Plate is a step closer to establishing a second location in Murrells Inlet.
GEORGETOWN - Over the next six months, Georgetown County's Stormwater Division will partner with county residents on a Watershed Master Plan to determine how drainage impacts the Waccamaw Neck, and recommend improvements to infrastructure and policies to mitigate those impacts. The master plan kicks off with a public meeting at 5:30 p.m.
GEORGETOWN - Georgetown County schools, after losing a near-state high percentage of students during the pandemic, is expecting to rebound this fall. District Superintendent Keith Price said the district has roughly 600 more new enrollments compared to this time last year.
GEORGETOWN - The city of Georgetown's electric department building on Church Street could be sold to a local businessman and developer for a $25 million project with luxury condos, a market and offices overlooking marshland. But where the city electric department would relocate is a mystery, and that has some Georgetown City Council members concerned.
GEORGETOWN - Georgetown's public school students could walk into classrooms this fall and get their first whiff of normalcy since March 2020. GEORGETOWN - What started as an educational character for youth pastor and Georgetown-native Shawn Goins' church students is now a business venture with thousands of young fans. Handyman Hal, Goins' YouTube persona, has amassed more than 6,000 subscribers in the past year for his videos teaching children how to build and fix things.

GEORGETOWN - Two of the three winners of the Georgetown city council Democratic primary June 8 were familiar faces - former candidate Ronald McInnis, who lost to now-councilmember Jonathan Angner in March, and council incumbent Tupelo Humes. But a new name took the third most votes this primary, beating former councilmember Sheldon Butts by only 19 votes: Dennzon Winley, the 26-year-old political first-timer.
GEORGETOWN - Tupelo Humes, Ronald McInnis and Dennzon Winley won the Georgetown City Council Democratic Primary, knocking Lee Padgett and Sheldon Butts out of the race on June 8. "The hard work is only beginning," said Winley, the 26-year-old political newcomer.
GEORGETOWN - For Georgetown County to grow and move forward, it is going to have to add more affordable housing, county economic development director Brian Tucker said. And a study by Bowen National Research paid for by the county backs this claim, citing that the county's poverty rate currently stands above the national average and more than 12,000 people commute to work outside county each day.

GEORGETOWN - In a 3-3 vote May 25, Georgetown County Council voted against rezoning land owned by Tidelands Health off of North Fraser Street and Wedgefield Road to allow for multifamily housing. This vote overturned council's previous second reading vote May 11 in support of the rezoning.
GEORGETOWN - Georgetown's five primary Democratic city council candidates Sheldon Butts, Tupelo Humes, Ronald McInnis, Lee Padgett and Dennzon Winley debated on May 24 topics such as bringing jobs that pay living wages to the city. Because there are five Democrats vying for only three at-large city council seats, there will be a Democrat primary election June 8.
GEORGETOWN - Time and time again, Marilyn Hemingway said Georgetown's Gullah-Geechee community has not had the opportunity to honor its enslaved ancestors. The reintering and honoring of their comingled, previously mishandled remains, though, is a good place to start, she said.
GEORGETOWN - Murrells Inlet is one step closer to having a new brewery at U.S. 17 and Wachesaw Road thanks to a unanimous planning commission rezoning vote May 20. Owners of the popular Quigley's Pint & Plate locations are proposing a 4,000-square-foot brewery, an accompanying pavilion and artisan village made of repurposed shipping containers called The CoQuina Project.
GEORGETOWN - After a school year many teachers say was riffled with struggle as they adjusted their curriculum and modes of teaching to fit COVID-19 protocols, Georgetown's public school teachers may see salary increases next year. As a whole, Georgetown County School District's proposed budget for next year is $93.2 million - $1.6 million more than the current budget.
SOCASTEE - As the Coastal Explorer chugged along the Intracoastal Waterway at Osprey Marina, it let down a piece of metal into the water behind it. Though the metal looked more like a rocket ship than anything, really it was scanning for any divots or bumps on the floor of the waterway.
GEORGETOWN - To pay for improvements suggested by the Watershed Master Plan, Georgetown County will allocate $2 million in its 2021-22 budget, but not necessarily adjust its separate stormwater fund accordingly.
In light of Gov. Henry McMaster's orders to immediately end local mask mandates and allow parents to decline school mask requirements, Grand Strand public schools are having to adjust their protocols. McMaster's order directed DHEC to make a waiver form for parents to fill out if they want to opt-out of any face covering requirements in schools.
GEORGETOWN - In light of the heavy development happening around Georgetown, specifically in the Waccamaw Neck, county planning director Holly Richardson is proposing updates to its tree ordinance to ensure more of the region's beloved forestry is preserved. One of the main changes to the ordinance is a site inspection requirement before any ground is broken.
PAWLEYS ISLAND - Whether it's meeting with a real estate agent or stopping in for a quick layered donut and coffee, Parlor Doughnuts wants to establish itself as a destination for everyone in Pawleys Island. Parlor Doughnuts is set to open at the end of May just off U.S.
GEORGETOWN - In a city where the council has almost always been majority Democrat, it only is fitting that there are five Democrats vying for only three at-large city council seats. Because of this excess of candidates, Georgetown City Council must hold a Democrat primary election June 8.
GEORGETOWN - Over the last several weeks, residents of Wedgefield Plantation have raised concerns over various parts of an affordable housing project proposed just outside its gates. Despite close to 100 residents of the community showing up in protest, a rezoning for this development was recommended by the planning commission to county council April 15.
GEORGETOWN - Despite a group of parents who showed up to tell the Georgetown Country school district board to end mask mandates for the remainder of the year, the district's medical advisory team recommended May 4 keeping mask and plexiglass rules in place.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Leona Bonds was born and raised in Georgetown. She's seen the way the schools in this town have changed over the decades, first as a student and now as a science teacher at Georgetown High School. Bonds attended Browns Ferry Elementary School in the early 1980s, where she was surrounded by other Black children and teachers.
GEORGETOWN - Marilyn Hemingway did not watch former police officer Derek Chauvin's conviction for the murder of George Floyd live. Not only was the president of the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce in a meeting when the verdict was read, but she said she tried not to watch the trial at all because it was too much to bear as a Black woman in America.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Schools learned Tuesday night that they will have additional federal money to use by Sept. 30, 2023 for things like adding a new full-time psychologist position and providing a summer school option for students who fell behind due to COVID-19.
GEORGETOWN — A timber site could be home to a 2,500-acre solar farm as early as 2023.
GEORGETOWN - Close to 100 residents of a gated, country club community groaned with dismay and cursed April 15 when the planning commission voted for a low-income apartment complex close to their subdivision. One resident of Wedgefield Plantation demanded to know when the topic would be discussed with Georgetown County Council.
GEORGETOWN - Over the last month, Republican Jonathan Angner said he knocked on nearly 1,200 doors to connect with voters and listen to their concerns. More than anything, Angner said he is glad the Georgetown City Council campaign is over - so that the real work can begin.
GEORGETOWN - Affordable housing has been a topic of conversation in Georgetown County for months and even years, but the term "affordable" does not have a universal, numerical value. Technically, "affordable" is supposed to be 80 percent of median wages in the county, said Brian Tucker, director of economic development for the county.
GEORGETOWN - While COVID-19 cases have dropped significantly inside of the Georgetown County school district, the virtual option that many students are still utilizing has has been riddled with internet issues, something that virtual teachers say they have gone back and forth with the district on in an attempt to quell the issue.
GEORGETOWN - A traffic count was conducted on Highway 17 in 2019, and it showed that peak season daily traffic volumes on on the road range from 30,500 to 47,500 vehicles per day. Looking ahead at 2040, the Grand Strand Area Transportation Study said that projections range from 46,200 to 71,900 vehicles per day.
GEORGETOWN - On April 13 the city of Georgetown will be able to vote for its newest member of city council, which will pit Democrat Ronald McInnis and Republican Jonathan Angner for former council member Rudolph Bradley's seat, who died in November 2020.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Marsh Deane studied a medley of things in college, from landscape architecture to exercise science, but nothing ever stuck with him as something he would be passionate about doing forever.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Terry Reed, Dedric Bonds and Tranis Parker are all residents of Spring Gully, a unincorporated community just outside Georgetown city limits. At Tuesday night's Georgetown County Council meeting, the three men spoke emotionally during public comment about the flooding, drainage and road issues in their community.
GEORGETOWN - A flyer sponsored by a dark-money group has been mailed to city residents, urging voters to not elect Democratic council candidate Ronald McInnis over his assumed support of transgender girls competing in girls sports. A group called "Concerned Parents of Georgetown" used the mailed flyer to ask voters to "protect women's and girls' sports" - an inaccurate accusation, according to McInnis.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - A thousand year flood hit the Spring Gully community in 2015, and resident Dedric Bonds said it was like a sword cut through the scarred, still-healing community. "It was something that took the scab off Mother Earth," Bonds said.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Currently limited to part-time counselors split between schools, a pair of elementary and middle school representatives proposed to the Georgetown County School District board March 16 that full-time rehabilitative behavioral health services (RBHS) counselors be added to all elementary schools and Waccamaw Middle School for the 2021-22 school year.
GEORGETOWN - Jonathan Angner has been attending Georgetown City Council meetings with his wife for years, and said he continues to see a pattern of issues being discussed, but never solved.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Residents of Georgetown County are frustrated with persistent flooding in their neighborhoods, and hoping county council will devote more attention and funding to the issue. Meanwhile, the county slashed 59 percent from its stormwater fund last year, and more than 12 percent from the year before that.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - End-of-course tests for high school students in the Georgetown County School District showed a significant difference between hybrid and virtual students after the end of the first semester, with hybrid averaging nearly 6 points higher.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - As elementary school students across the Georgetown County School District head back to full-time, face-to-face instruction on March 1 - with their counterparts in middle and high schools joining them on March 8 - there are differing perspectives as to whether the district is truly ready for the instructional model change.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - After several community members spoke before the Georgetown County Council's Feb. 23 meeting, the council deferred an ordinance to allocate the remaining 2014 Capital Project Sales Tax surplus. A total of 11 community members spoke in strong opposition of the ordinance, demanding it be deferred and saying that they were unhappy with the current allocations.
GEORGETOWN - The Georgetown City Council approved a zoning ordinance on Feb. 18 to allow for solar panels to be installed on various properties across the city.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Georgetown County School District voted 8-1 to move middle and high school students from Hybrid to Hybrid Plus learning starting March 1, while elementary students will shift from Hybrid Plus to Prime starting March 1 and middle and high school students from Hybrid Plus to Prime March 8.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - As pressure mounts from the Georgetown County School District's board and vocal parents, GCSD Superintendent Keith Price said he would support a proposal to the school board for middle and high school students to shift to Hybrid+ learning, so long as the schools are able to have five key health mitigation strategies in place.
MYRTLE BEACH - From the very beginning, Socastee native Mike Rogers and Conway native Perry Richardson were united through music. Their fathers, Tommy Rogers and Clayton Richardson, used to play together in bars and on stages around Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand.
GEORGETOWN - Ronald McInnis, who won the Democratic primary special election for the Georgetown City Council seat Tuesday night, is a first-timer in the political world, but has a story to tell that led him to who he is today. McInnis moved to Georgetown when he was a child, his parents relocating to the area to teach school.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Georgetown County Council had a second hearing Tuesday night for Ordinance 21-05, which addresses how the remaining $7 million surplus from the 2014 Capital Project Sales Tax will be allocated to other capital projects.
MYRTLE BEACH - From a young age - 8, to be exact - Cookie Goings knew she wanted to be a teacher. She declared this goal to her classmates and teacher as one of the first six African-American children to integrate the third grade at Myrtle Heights Elementary school in 1968.
GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Earlier this month, while painting a piece titled "Long Road Home," Sonja Griffin Evans listened to "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver. As the song played on repeat, describing picturesque scenes of roads that take those where they need to go, Griffin Evans painted her own road with a fork in it.
SURFSIDE BEACH - It really felt like fate that her daughter ended up on a surfboard. "She watched the movie Soul Surfer, and she said she wanted to try that," said Lynn Grayden-Labiak, keeping a watchful eye on her 17-year-old in the distance.

ANDERSON - About 50 people gathered at the Anderson City Building on Sunday afternoon and marched in downtown Anderson to support the end of child sex trafficking. Dustin and Sydney Stout and their daughters, Layla, 16, and Lily, 13, all of Pendleton, organized the "Save Our Children march," as it was titled on Facebook, because the issue of child sex trafficking has not been talked about enough, they said.
MOONSVILLE - In northeastern Madison County, the small once-settlement called Moonsville can be found at the intersection of county roads East 600 North and North 300 East. Flowing under a bridge on 500 North, a creek is fed by a flowing water well.
When Tina Boone-Turner watches her grandsons, 11-year-old Braylon and 7-year-old Zayveon, she often thinks of their father. "The things I knew as an adult, I would be reminded by him: 'Mom, be strong, you're going to get through this,'" Boone-Turner recalls. "He would always tell me that. He was very special."
ANDERSON - A statewide church organization has issued an apology for the recent appointment of a lay pastor who was convicted five years ago of official misconduct. After an outcry from church members, the pastor was removed.
ANDERSON - A former Frankton school principal who was convicted of official misconduct five years ago has been removed after a brief appointment as pastor of New Horizons United Methodist Church in Anderson.
ANDERSON - New Horizons United Methodist Church of Anderson welcomed Jerry Hoss as its new pastor on June 23 via Facebook. Five years ago, Hoss was sentenced to 18 months in the Indiana Department of Correction for a felony charge of official misconduct after he sent inappropriate text messages to two female students when he was principal of Frankton Junior-Senior High School.
ANDERSON - It was mainly opiates, Karl Lazar said, but he was using anything he could get his hands on. He never planned on getting sober, but then he got arrested in 2011. Lazar was sent to a court-mandated halfway house, and that's when something changed.
ANDERSON - Around 50 people gathered in front of the Anderson Police Department on Monday night to show their peaceful support for the local police. Organizer John Skinner said he wanted to show APD that its community supported it in wake of the criticism he felt police in general were receiving in the last several weeks.
ANDERSON - Several stacked cases of water bottles threatened to topple, while chips, granola and other snacks nearly overflowed a wagon pulled by an organizer. One attendee of the Friday protest march from Anderson's west side to downtown offered sunblock to anyone who needed it, while another attendee posed for a photo with a sign that read "Racism: America's original sin."
ANDERSON -Two-year-old Emma pulled a tissue from the box next to Virginia Lusher and handed it to her. Virginia smiled at her daughter and dabbed the skin under her eyes. "He was just that person that was just so different from everybody else, and just so charming and charismatic," Virginia Lusher said of her husband, Michael.
