When I was a kid, I was always mesmerized by those figurines of wizards and fairies and unicorns and mythical creatures. If I stared at them long enough, I could have sworn the unicorns might have tilted their heads just slightly or the wizards may have waved their wands to some incantation I couldn't hear.
Inspiring read: One of my favorite authors is Ian McEwan. I've read every-thing he has written, and his work always stays with me for weeks. He really nails the zeitgeist with his acute social observations. I feel that one of his most timely books is Solar, a book about climate change-written with a fierce and biting tone.
Sadly, gender disparity is part and parcel of almost every industry on our little blue planet. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 534 occupations listed, women make more than men in exactly seven positions; to be clear, that represents 3% of the female workforce.
As the classic storytelling device goes, a hero is called to save the world. And he-or she-must (sometimes reluctantly) answer the call by traversing new worlds with dragons and ogres, encountering goddesses and mentors, setbacks and a final battle in order to return victorious with an elixir to save the day.
