Three Museums Mark Valencia's Status as World Design Capital

Valencia is famous for many things-abundant citrus groves, rice paddies, and baroque-tinged streets and squares filled with swaying palm trees. Yet despite being home to the first modern and art museum in Spain, the IVAM, and Hábitat, the country's only international furniture and design fair, the city has never had the reputation of being a cultural powerhouse, unlike Barcelona or Madrid.

An Open Office Based on the Concept of the "Five Skins" - Metropolis

The project brings together Coatresa's offices and production facilities under one roof-a nave (warehouse) in Barcelona's industrialized belt of satellite towns and villages. The office space, which accommodates a staff of 25, has been gently sectioned into generous work neighborhoods with a metallic mesh that acts as filter between functions, but its semitransparency and lightness allows a sense of connection.

Felipe Pantone Defies Genre - Sixtysix Magazine

Like one of his artworks, there is a lot to take in at the studio of Felipe Pantone, situated in an industrial zone near Valencia. In one section, a team of masked painters is rendering surfaces with the dynamically colored grids, stripes, bolts, and checkerboards that typify his work.

A Childhood Home in Madrid Grows Up

In Spain, it is not uncommon for first-time nesters to settle close to their family home and aging parents, either in the same village or neighborhood, or in the apartment building where they grew up. This was the case with Joaquin Altamirano, who was raised in a seven-story red-brick apartment building in Madrid's central Ventas district.

Apparatu is a Ceramic Design Lab Transforming Traditional Pottery

Barcelona had seen more rain than usual over the past weeks, making the pine forests to the north of the city green and verdant. They make the 40-minute trip on the commuter train to Rubí a pleasant experience. Xavier Mañosa, the brains and creative behind the ceramics workshop Apparatu, does the journey every day, using the time to read.

Barcelona's Stunning Art Nouveau Casa Burés Receives Restoration

Even for the stylistic excesses of Catalan modernista (or Art Nouveau) architecture, the Casa Burés, dating from 1905, is in a class of its own. Like many landmarks in Barcelona's Eixample district, it was commissioned by a wealthy merchant at the height of the region's textile boom.

Selgascano: The Spanish Architects Mastering the Coworking Space

The open-plan office space has its origins in the late 1950s, when Quickborner , a German design group, came up with the concept of Bürolandschaft , or "office landscape." The firm's proposal for a workplace layout where desks were grouped into islands to facilitate human contact and a breakdown in hierarchy is now conventional wisdom.

Born again: Gaudí's meticulously restored Casa Vicens reopens in Barcelona

Born again: Gaudí's meticulously restored Casa Vicens reopens in Barcelona On a quiet street in Barcelona's Gràcia district, Casa Vicens has long been an off-radar landmark. The first major project by Catalonian modernist Antonio Gaudí, it attracts curious looks from the sidewalk, with passersby peering though the forged iron gates at a façade of rich red brick and fanciful tile work.

The Barcelona Home Like No Other

How Barcelona's Poblenou district is becoming the city's creative heart

Poblenou, or the 'new village', is Barcelona's work-in-progress. Straddling the Mediterranean and with numerous late-19th century industrial complexes ripe for redevelopment, it has stepped in to accommodate diverse roles for the modern urbanite. The transformation of the barri started about 20 years ago, when artists collectives took over abandoned factories to work and host parties.

10 Barcelona restaurants with awe-inspiring interiors

In a city famed for gastronomy, architecture and interior design, the wealth of stunning restaurants in Barcelona is staggering. Superchef Ferran Adrià spearheaded a global movement with his high-tech 'New Catalan Cuisine', and fairly soon designers and architects were called upon to create restaurant interiors (and plates and cutlery) as daring as the 50-course tasting menus devised by this new wave of chefs.

How I live: Catalan artist Antoni Miralda

Catalan artist Antoni Miralda is obsessed with food. Not in the way of a gourmand, but in the culture, politics and ritual of what we eat. Since the 1970s, he has expressed his views in avant-garde installations, happenings and performances all over Europe and the US, where his experiential restaurant El Internacional (created with partner Montse Guillén) became a celebrated New York hot spot.

Courtesy Rafael Vargas Despite the presence of a handful of important buildings, the Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes, in the eastern section of Barcelona, has always been considered a bit of a mess. Jean Nouvel's colorful Torre Agbar is here, and L'Auditori and the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya-by the prominent Spanish architects Rafael Moneo and Ricardo Bofill respectively-are nearby.

A Hole in the Darkness

by Suzanne Wales (1399 words) Even a simple portable lamp has the potential to improve people's lives, but only if it is introduced with respect for their culture. When visitors come to Africa they can suddenly find themselves 'cracked open', as the British writer and expert on Africa Richard Dowden so eloquently put it.

Flying high! The role of a corporate travel buyer

Take a moment to consider how much time and energy we use-up when we organize our own leisure travel or vacation. Think about how much screen time is spent digging for the best flight and hotel deals, agonizing over car rental cancellation policies, and if it's really worth paying for extras like breakfast and airport pick-ups.
