Dan Krill

Education Writer

United States

Dan Krill is a father, educator, and songwriter. He double-majored in math education and philosophy (BS, L&S, UW Madison, 2003), then earned his master’s in math education with an emphasis in learning sciences (MS, C&I, UW Madison, 2006). He has taught secondary and post-secondary math for over 21 years and currently works as a 5-12 instructional coach in south-eastern Wisconsin. He will complete his principal and director licenses in Spring of 2026.

Dan began his teaching career as a software trainer, summer math instructor, and camp counselor. Though each setting was unique in content and audience, they all required high engagement without a grading system. Those experiences fueled Dan's love of project-based, personalized learning. His passion for writing, performing, and recording music further shaped his beliefs about the classroom experience. Namely, the art and craft of moving initial ideas into final products via reflection, revision, and resourcefulness.

Thus far, Dan has published over a dozen articles and blogs related to maintaining teacher autonomy, fostering creativity, and recognizing opportunities to learn in day to day experiences. He has also released more than 5 full-length albums of original songs—the most recent as a vinyl record! Further, he's presented at the SLATE conference on project-based learning in math and the WATG conference on math programming that supports gifted learners. He returned to WATG this fall to present on his article "Math Notations Are Invented" and presented at WSST this spring on his article "Stifled By Standards? Get Creative!" Next, he's headed to the WMC math conference in May to present on inclusive and exclusive definitions in mathematics.

Dan is readily available for writing, speaking, music performance or professional development opportunities.
