The Yankees have today off after going 3-4 in the first seven games of their big AL East stretch. Losing two out of three in Baltimore could almost be expected, but I was hoping for something better than a split in Toronto.
After Tuesday night's bullpen debacle, the Yankees really needed length from Luis Severino. He did not disappoint: 8.0IP, 4H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 7K. Dellin Betances struck out the side in the ninth, completing the shut-out against the Royals, 3-0. Severino seems to have come full circle now.
I was glad to see that the Blue Jays won their first series of the year before they played the Yankees this season. However, it still stung to watch them win on Monday night at the Stadium. All the old fear and heartache that came from playing Toronto the past two years returned, and they weren't welcome visitors.

"He's playing tee-ball right now." This is what Carlos Beltran said last night when asked about the performance of his new teammate Starlin Castro, in the first two games of this new Yankees season. After having a great spring training, Castro has begun his career in the Bronx with a resounding bang.
In July of 1979, shortly after Thurman Munson was killed in a plane crash, there was a good amount of sentiment that the team's captaincy should be retired. More than a few people felt that Munson should be the last official leader of the ball club. His death was that much of a tragedy.
Mark Teixeira's "no-fun" diet has become the talk of Spring Training. Fans and media alike have been talking non-stop about it, which includes no dairy, no sugar and no gluten. Teixeira hopes that the diet will help him avoid inflammation and, thus, keep him on the field in 2015.
The "Killer B's," comprised of Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances and Andrew Brackman, were once the future of starting pitching for the New York Yankees. Of the three, Banuelos seemed to have the most potential. I, myself, could have bet that, though he was younger than the other two, Manny Banuelos would be the first to have success on a Major League mound.
Michael Pineda looks pretty stupid right now. After all, he used pine tar--blatantly--for the second time, against the same team. He did it after that team--and, at least one other--publicly declared they would watch him closely for signs of it, or for any other form of cheating in the future.
With the first of the formal team farewells taking place last night in Houston, what better time than now to start a new series: The Derek Jeter Gift Meter. After each team's farewell I will rate the gift(s) presented to Jeter on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being perfect and 1 being absolute garbage.
Bronx Bombers, a new play about the Yankees, is scheduled to open on Broadway next month. It is now in previews at the Circle In The Square Theatre and, on Saturday evening, blog contributor Christina and I attended a performance.
Yesterday's Hall Of Fame announcement came with the usual controversy and debates over who was and wasn't elected, and who did and did not receive votes. However, the biggest storyline that developed after the announcement, in my opinion, was Dan Le Batard's decision to turn his ballot over to Deadspin.
