Whittier Strong

Writer

United States of America

I am an English educator currently residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Originally from Indiana, I earned my BA in creative writing from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

My writing mostly looks at issues of social justice and identity. What keeps me writing is best summed up by James Baldwin: "You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can't, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world... The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even but a millimeter the way people look at reality, then you can change it.”

Various States of Undress

BY WHITTIER STRONG I was eight when my mom escaped my father's abuses. In the middle of the night, she fled with us four kids to the battered women's shelter on the north side of Bloomington, Indiana. That shelter would be my home for the month of January 1983.

IBS There are a couple of jokes I tell about Irritable Bowel Syndrome: "Solid, liquid, or gas?" is both a third-grade science lesson and IBS. IBS is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get. I joke, but it's serious. I'm not really sure when my illness first developed.

It's a penetrating and unforgettable look into the hearts and souls of those defiant enough to explore their own vulnerabilities and demonstrate their own strengths. "Queer sexuality and disability places me so far outside the realms of the everyday that it renders people silent."

That is what I should have told Judge Chu. But I was taken aback-in all my research, I hadn't encountered any mention that she would ask why I wanted to change my name. But really, what could I say?

In my writing, I try to walk a line between memoir and social commentary, and I consider this flash essay to be one of my best attempts at this tightrope walk. The story originally had a much different ending, in which I went on a rant, condemning a society that could produce a woman who had such awful views of members of her own species-my "J'accuse moment".
