I am currently an MFA candidate in nonfiction at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. I also write poetry and the occasional short story. Originally from Indiana, I earned my BA in creative writing from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota.
My writing mostly looks at issues of social justice and identity; my thesis-in-progress addresses (amongst other things) housing instability, intersectionality, and the rise of social media. What keeps me writing is best summed up by James Baldwin: "You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can't, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world... The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even but a millimeter the way people look at reality, then you can change it.”
