DCU students protest over 27% rent hike

DCU students held a protest over rent increases of over 20 per cent in privately-owned student accommodation in the Glasnevin area on Thursday. The purpose-built Shanowen Square accommodation complex recently announced a rental increase of 27 per cent for the 2018/2019 academic year while the operators of the nearby Shanowen Halls announced an increase of over 23.5 percent.

Sinn Féin youth disagrees with Sinn Féin abortion stance

The youth believe that abortion should be made free, safe and legal to all, whereas Sinn Féin believes it should be made available under certain stipulations. "The youth and Sinn Féin don't share the same opinion on the matter."

Fire breaks out in campus pharmacy - The College View

There were no injuries when a fire broke out in the DCU pharmacy Pharmahealth on Tuesday at 11:12am. Nobody was injured, there was very little damage and the Fire Safety Warden suspects a kettle was the source of the fire but a full report has yet to be completed.

Schoolbag graveyard highlights student suicide - The College View

124 schoolbags, representing the average number of student deaths by suicide every year, were laid on the green in DCU Glasnevin to start Mental Health Week on Thursday 13th November. DCU Students' Union collaborated with the suicide awareness charity 3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide) to create the installation around the theme of 'Share the Load; a problem shared is a problem halved'.

Over 45 students 'sleepout' for Shanowen Shakedown Part 2 - The College View

DCU students protested for a second time against the introduction of a 27 per cent increase in rents by Shanowen Square and the 23.5 per cent increase by Shanowen Halls' accommodation. After DCU received no response from the operators of the complexes after their first demonstration they decided to brave the elements and stage a 'sleepout,' which over 45 people participated in, on the 5 th of April.

The annual rent for Shanowen Square has increased by 27 per cent from last year. The increase brings the total cost to €8695 for the 2018/2019 academic year, an increase of €1850. The rent covers from the 10th of September to the 25th May, a period of eight months - meaning rent is the equivalent of €235 a week.

New Hub launch delayed until September - The College View

The launch of the new DCU student centre has been delayed until September, according to DCUSU President Niall Behan. Commencement on the €14 million project began in late June 2016 and originally aimed to be finished in February, but will not be ready by the end of the 2017/18 academic year due to delays in construction.

Postgrads dissatisfied with accommodation changes - The College View

Postgraduate students are unhappy with the increase in rent and change in lease length that occurred over the summer, according to Student's Union postgraduate officer, Allan Stevenson. Speaking to The College View, PhD students, who wish to remain anonymous, said they are quite discontent with what has happened with their accommodation.

Conservative paper comes to DCU - The College View

A conservative publication based out of Trinity College has expanded to DCU in what its editor called an attempt to provide a diversity of opinion in student-related matters. The Burkean Journal, which was funded by right-wing businessman Declan Ganley, was set up in Trinity College last September to provide students with an opportunity to report on political issues from a conservative viewpoint.

Arts graduates lowest earners according to HEA - The College View

New arts graduates may earn as little as €13,000 a year, according to a HEA report. But most CAO applicants opt for arts and humanities degrees at 22 per cent, while 16 per cent choose science degrees, according to 2012 figures.

Two students hospitalised over bad batch of drugs - The College View

Two NUI Galway students were hospitalised after taking a "bad batch" of drugs. The alarm was raised by NUIG's Students' Union, who posted on twitter asking for any information on the students who were reported missing. ''A bad batch of drugs have been taken on campus.

Campaign launched for warning labels on takeaways - The College View

Chinese takeaways and ready meals should carry health warning labels on their packaging and menus for high salt content, according to health campaign group Action on Salt. A survey published on March 13th by Action on Salt found Chinese takeaway dishes contain just as much salt as five McDonalds's Big Macs, with many more having more than half an adult's entire daily allowance.

President Higgins calls on EU to embrace diversity - The College View

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, said that the EU needs to embrace diversity and promote social cohesion. Speaking at the launch of the DCU Brexit Institute, the keynote speech by Mr Higgins focused on the need for politicians to dissent against the division of people due to religion, race and nationality.

The crackdown on learner drivers - The College View

Over the past week, new legislation has been brought before the Dáil regarding learner drivers. The new legislation, called the Road Traffic Amendment Bill, states that an unaccompanied learner driver will have the vehicle seized. The driver of that vehicle will then have a fine of €2,000 and a possible jail time of up to six months.

EIB loans to address student accommodation crisis - The College View

The student accommodation crisis rages on, as the cost of renting in Dublin continues to rise, jumping 12.3 per cent in the past year. According to the latest Daft.ie rental report, the cost of renting in Dublin is now €4,000 a year higher than during the peak of the Celtic Tiger.

When you leave school you're hit with the pressure to make the right choice. Recently in Ireland, the "right choice" has become synonymous with going to university. It's gone so far that when many people fill out their CAO forms, they instinctively and subconsciously fill it with level eight courses without considering other options.

"Everything is on in this tournament" - Declan Roche - The College View

DCU soccer manager Declan Roche is targeting a first Collingwood Cup victory for the university in the upcoming showpiece tournament. The Collingwood, the most prestigious cup in third level football, kicks off February 5th in Queen's University in Belfast, where DCU open their campaign against University Ulster Jordanstown.

DCU women's soccer performance a big statement, but still no points - The College View

DCU 3 NUIM 4 CUFL Women's Premier Division North After setting Division one alight last year, ending the season with a perfect record and closing the campaign with a 3-0 win over runners up, University of Limerick, DCU cemented their place back in the top flight. However, the honeymoon period has quickly dissipated.

Mosney residents, rookies and DCU Basketball 'let off steam' in 3v3 battle - The College View

DCU Basketball's mixed 3v3 tournament brought a little March Madness to the Glasnevin campus, and a welcome trip for residents of the Mosney Accommodation Centre. Last year's tournament was a success all around, attracting students of all experience levels to let off a little steam and play some basketball, but this year the competition took on a different significance.
