Today's Major League Soccer looks much like soccer played around the world, but that was not always the case. When MLS began in 1996, the league used a number of different rules in an attempt to appeal to the average American sports fan. One of those differences was the penalty kick shootout, which occurred to prevent ties.
With the coronavirus outbreak stopping sports leagues across the country, specifically Major League Soccer, we're celebrating the past and looking back at some of the greatest games in Columbus Crew SC history. We begin today with the game that started it all, April 13, 1996, against rivals The opening day of MLS in Columbus, and the thrilling 4-0 Columbus Crew win against D.C.
The odds of Columbus Crew SC making the 2019 MLS Cup playoffs are very slim to none. Practically zero. However, there is still a lot to play for in the final four games of the Major League Soccer regular season for the Black & Gold.
Columbus Crew SC earned a point on the road in the 1-1 tie against the San Jose Earthquakes. A Gyasi Zardes goal in the 65 th minute, after a first half penalty kicked, extended the Black & Gold's unbeaten streak to four games.
Columbus Crew SC has conceded a total of 30 goals with a -13-goal differential that has contributed to the Black & Gold being in second to last place in Major League Soccer with 17 points, second only to league-newcomer and "Hell Is Real" rival, FC Cincinnati.
In the past 10 MLS matches, Columbus Crew SC earned four out of a possible 30 points. To put it another way, the Crew won one game out of the past 10 matches. And to put it yet another way, this miserable 10-game stretch has roughly been one-third of the 2019 Major League Soccer regular season.
Here are the facts for the 2019 Colorado Rapids: 12 games played, five points, one win, 30 goals against and a -13-goal differential. The Rapids are the worst team in Major League Soccer. Despite team starters that include United States Men's National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard and forward Kei Kamara, the Rapids have lost nine of the team's 12 games.
Columbus Crew SC 's recent four-game losing streak has, in no small part, resulted from conceding seven goals over this stretch. This came after allowing just four goals during the first six games - three in one match where Columbus had multiple players missing due to international duty - and beginning the year 4-1-1.
Seven games into the 2019 MLS season and Columbus Crew SC has scored seven goals and conceded five goals. While the Crew sits in second place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points and a 4-2-1 record, the offense has not produced with only two attacking players on the scoresheet.
Columbus Crew SC is on top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference with 13 points after six games, only conceding four goals (0.67 goals per game). That's the good news. The bad news is that Columbus has only scored seven goals (1.2 goals per game), which is the number of goals the Montreal Impact has tallied - a team currently in the middle of the aforementioned conference standings.
This past weekend, Columbus Crew SC beat Atlanta United for the first time ever, playing in a miserable downpour that began with a goal in the 2nd minute from winger Pedro Santos in front of just under 11,000 dedicated fans at MAPFRE Stadium. Was that a soccer game or the sequel to the movie Waterworld?
"I think there have been some guys really licking their chops, just ready to step in and get a game," Caleb Porter said this week.
Cheering in the closed end of Ohio Stadium with my dad while watching the very first Columbus Crew SC game back on April 13, 1996, was an unforgettable experience that resulted in a thrilling 4-0 win against D.C. United. This game confirmed that something big involving soccer in Columbus was unfolding.

For around a year, I've been waiting for a particular package to arrive. Patiently...waiting. No, it wasn't late. This time, the package just took a while, and for legitimate reasons. The contents of which were going to be amazing and, honestly, out of this world when opened.
Every story has a beginning, middle and an end... with twists, turns and surprises. Distinguishing quality between firms/brands (ie- the grocery shelf test) is found on or between known and new. And working with media/journalists is a key dynamic in this task. Perhaps the most critical (and subtle) strategy in working with this relentless force...
If you're afraid of heights...how do I put this. https://youtu.be/G7mbg3eVU4Y If a skyscraper of more than 70 stories doesn't evoke a sense of wonder at being so high in the sky, a clear glass slide on the outside of said building should certainly do the trick. Along with some possible vertigo.
If this were Medieval times (the era, not the restaurant), Columbus and Los Angeles would be preparing for a joust between a 20-year knight and a hotshot newcomer of the soccer kingdom. The Columbus Crew SC, one of the first ten teams of Major League Soccer (MLS), has been defined by its colors.

We don't know what the story is, we don't know when the movie will be released and we don't know who will star, but fans of Christopher Nolan are excited. Cinematographer Will McCrabb started this buzz-worthy news on his Twitter account, citing that the famed-director has completed a "comprehensive draft" for his next movie.
Aliens. Great White Sharks. A whip-happy, gun-slinging professor of archaeology. Dinosaurs. A horse? Steven Spielberg, one of the greatest movie directors of all-time, has introduced the public to a wide-range of characters, most of which grab our attention from the title's alone. "Jaws," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Jurassic Park" are just...
