Chronic lower respiratory disease Diseases in this category include bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. Chronic lower respiratory disease, also known as COPD, takes 120,000 of lives in the U.S. each year. In Miami, 4.6 percent of residents died from some sort of COPD. Air pollutants, tobacco and genetics are risk factors of COPD.
