UNC-Chapel Hill clinical associate professor Cliff Missen, an advocate for prisoner education, has interacted with thousands of inmates. But he said there's nothing like being a part of an inmate's first experiences at a prison book club. "Inmates show up for a meeting with a book from the 1800's, and these people are crying," Missen said.

Two very different evenings with Dawes

Silent Sam Cypher addresses controversy with music

Though the improvisational nature of freestyle rapping prevents any true agenda for the cypher, Katz and Rowsey hope the cypher will provide students and observers with an approachable alternative method of dialogue to discuss difficult racial issues related to Silent Sam. While Rowsey and company will lead the cypher, participation from the crowd is encouraged.

A level playing field for gender and athletics

The latest iteration of this debate is currently being waged by members of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, including standouts Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo and Alex Morgan, who filed a federal complaint against U.S. Soccer citing wage discrimination in late March.

Chicago's Cash-Free Pizza Joint Comes to Life

In a compact space in Chicago's growing West Loop neighborhood, Rick Tasman runs the show at Bonci Pizza. During the lunch rush in the Windy City, the BonciUSA president doesn't look like a typical executive, though-which is fair, considering that Bonci doesn't serve typical Chicago pizza.An apron on his chest, Tasman manages the Roman-style pizzeria, open since August, from the front of the house.
