Sara Gobets began her journalism education as a writer and photographer for De Anza Community College’s newspaper, La Voz Weekly. At La Voz, Gobets worked her way up to photo editor, circulation editor, and editor-in-chief. After her departure from the paper, Gobets was hired by the journalism department to advise students on journalism best practices and train them on software and equipment. Before starting at San Francisco State University, Gobets began an internship at SFGate.com. After transferring to SF State, Gobets became the photo editor at the student paper, Golden Gate Xpress, but soon left that position to take a job as a staff photojournalist at Sonoma West Times and News. She has degrees in photojournalism and anthropology. Gobets is currently working as a freelance photojournalist in the U.S., Guam, and Southeast Asia. Her work has been featured in various publications including National Geographic, SF Chronicle, SFGate, and Sonoma West Times & News.

Gobets grew up in Santa Cruz, California, which she credits for fostering a deep respect and love for the outdoors. She was bit by the travel bug at an early age (her first trip abroad without her family was at 13) and has been a solo international traveler since she bought a one-way ticket to Thailand at age 18. While traveling and working through SE Asia over several years, Sara discovered scuba diving and fell in love with the sport. She is now a divemaster and underwater photographer as well.
