Granny protesting US drones fights jail sentence

An American grandmother sentenced to a year in jail after photographing an anti-drone protest outside a military base in Hancock, New York, is appealing her conviction for violating a restraining order. Mary Anne Grady Flores, 58, is set to appear in the New York State Court of Appeals Wednesday, hoping to get her one-year jail term overturned.

Climate activist convicted in Montana pipeline protest

An activist trying to highlight the effects of climate change has been convicted for closing a valve on a pipeline carrying crude oil from Canada to the US. He is the third activist to be convicted over the multi-state civil disobedience action. A Montana jury found Leonard Higgins of Portland, Oregon, guilty of criminal mischief and trespassing Wednesday.

Activists handcuffed by NYPD at US mission to UN over Yemen protest

Fourteen protesters staging a civil disobedience action were led away handcuffed by New York police outside the US mission to the UN. Activists were holding "Let Yemen Live" and "Stop Bombing Yemen" placards. The UN protest formed part of coordinated protests at Saudi Arabian consulates in several US cities.

Michigan lawyer drops 'halal pizza' suit after threats

An attorney in Dearborn, Michigan who had sued Little Caesars for falsely advertising 'halal' pizza containing pork, has dropped his legal action after he and his family received racially charged threats on social media. Majed Moughni, an Arab-American, said after he filed the lawsuit in May that it had garnered a lot of media attention and "brought out a lot of haters."

'Not enough': Native Americans react to Cleveland Indians dropping 'racist' mascot

The Cleveland Indians baseball team will drop its Chief Wahoo mascot from uniforms for its 2019 season, Major League Baseball announced. Critics said the move does little to deal with the racism and bigotry of fans. "Chief Wahoo" will be removed from the Indians' uniforms for the 2019 season, Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred Jr announced on Monday.
