Lucknow metro latest to take the solar route

By Pratyush Dayal [LUCKNOW] Realizing the significance of solar energy, Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is going eco-friendly by utilizing solar photovoltaic systems to run its metro stations and depots - a move which will reduce its dependency on grid power. The photovoltaic cells installed at Transportnagar depot generates about 1-megawatt solar energy daily.

Violation of child rights increases across the world

Violations of child rights have increased considerably across the globe from the last year, the annual report of the United Nations Secretary-General on children and armed conflict released this week has concluded. As compared to 15,500 violations in 2016, the UN verified a total of 21,000 violations of children's rights from January to December 2017.

Ethiopia, Eritrea resolve decades-long conflict

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed signed a declaration of peace this Monday thereby formally ending the state of war between the countries. Though Eritrea had seceded from Ethiopia in 1991 after a 30-year war for independence, and eventually gained international recognition, it continued having conflicts with Ethiopia.

WHO no longer considers transgenderism a mental illness

The World Health Organization has taken off transgenderism from the list of mental illnesses in its new catalogue that was released on Monday. Transgenderism was previously tagged in the list of mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders. But the new catalogue, which covers 55,000 diseases, injuries and causes of death, the 'gender incongruence' is put under conditions related to sexual health.

Millions affected by conflict in South Sudan needs international assistance: UN

About 1.74 million people have been internally displaced and 2.47 million refugees are in neighbouring countries due to the conflict in South Sudan. According to South Sudan Humanitarian Bulletin Issue 6, released this Monday by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the country has up to 2.4 million children who do not receive any education.
