I am a junior at Syracuse University, studying Newspaper and Online Journalism in the the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. During the course of my academic career, I've worked for various student newspapers in Portland and New York, as well as held the position of Communications Intern with Paramount Property Company in Oakland, CA. This summer, I also had the privilege of attending the University of California, Berkeley for an intensive 15-credit summer journalism program. In my career, I have proven skills in AP style, interviewing, breaking news reporting and investigative skills.

Student government gives itself a pay raise

In the final minutes of the last Senate meeting of the fall semester, the ASUP (Associated Students of University of Portland) Senate voted to give itself a 10 percent raise, while voting for a 16.6 percent raise for the ASUP president, vice president, director of communications, director of finance, campus program board (CPB) director and speaker of the ASUP senate.

Barbershop on The Bluff

The Bluff Boys are now a performing collegiate barbershop quartet here at UP. The group consists of Persing singing tenor, White singing lead, and brothers Brad and Kevin Henderson singing baritone and bass, respectively. They perform various events and pop-up performances all over campus and are gearing up for the Evergreen District Division Four competition in April in Eugene, Oregon.

ASUP fall budget lowers leaders' stipends, gives more money to clubs

At the final Senate meeting of the year on April 23, ASUP passed the Fall semester 2018 budget that includes pay cuts for executive board and Speaker of the Senate positions' stipends. They also allocated an additional $12,500 to clubs, money that surfaced when the Executive Board discovered the original budget inadvertently understated available funds.

On Wednesday night, Cash Flow Club hosted a panel in the Chiles Hall of Fame room on perfecting the art of the "side hustle." A side hustle is a business or skill someone works on in addition to their main job or schooling that brings in extra cash.

Two part self defense course to begin Monday night

The first of two "Personal Safety and Awareness" classes will take place on Monday, Nov. 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Beauchamp Recreation Center studio 30. The classes, which were organized by ASUP and the Beauchamp Recreation Center, will be led by Public Safety Sergeant Michael Kranyak and are free for all community members to attend.
